"Roll a Story"
Students in Mrs. Oddy's 2nd grade classroom learned that every good story has a beginning, middle and end. The beginning covers the main characters and setting, the middle introduces the conflict, and the ending has a solution.
In order to practice this story writing order, students played a game called "Roll a Story". As a class, the students rolled the dice to determine which character, setting, and problem were going to be included in their story. Mrs. Oddy scribed for the class while the students came up with a funny story. Very creative!
Ninja Life Hacks
Mrs. Nykerk introduced a neat set of books to her students: Ninja Life Hacks. These books were developed to help children learn valuable life skills. The overarching message in these books is: “Life is tough, but so are you!”
She started the series by reading “Anxious Ninja.” In this story, the Anxious Ninja experiences difficult emotions until a friend shared some tips on how to handle anxiety. Students learned about “The Three R’s” and how this can be a “separate weapon against anxiety.” These include: Recognize, Relax, & Refocus.
Students had outstanding discussion and examples of times when they have felt anxious and what they did to overcome the anxiety. The class worked through a few hypothetical scenarios by following The Three R’s. Finally, students had a chance to reflect on how they felt today and write/draw about it. This book series will continue to be read throughout the year!
