Being DAPPER
During preplanning, I spoke to our staff about Broken Windows Theory, a theory of crime featured in Malcolm Gladwell’s book, The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference (2001). Its premise is that crime is the inevitable result of disorder; that seemingly little acts of disobedience, if left unattended, can lead to larger problems. Leaving little things unaddressed causes people to wonder if anyone cares, or if anyone is in charge. Leaving little things unaddressed can breed apathy, confusion, and undermine morale.
GWA, of course, does not have a crime problem. But leaving little things at a school unaddressed – such as excessive tardies, absences, or dress code violations – can become a problem and undermine a positive culture. I surveyed teachers last spring about priorities and concerns. They asked the administration to do more to address these infractions; to enforce the rules. We will do so.
Teachers and I request that you support us this year, as we work harder to explain and enforce rules regarding Dress, Appearance and Promptness. It will take a total team effort. We want our students to look DAPPER!
I am grateful for your support of our team of educators.
We are One Dawg Strong!

Inquiring Minds
Can change occur in an instant? AP Calculus students explored the two big ideas of calculus on the first day of school with an inquiry activity. Students worked in groups to find the slope at a point and the area of a curved irregular shape. Without knowing it, they were introduced to the concepts of derivatives and integrals.
Sharpening Skills
Last week, Mrs. Bryd’s eighth-grade English students completed an activity to sharpen their communications skills by “going into the woods.” They “hiked” into the Canadian forest and encountered obstacles along the way. Using their speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, students had to research, determine and discuss solutions with their partners in order to make it “out of the woods.”
Batter Up!
What better way is there to get multiplication tables memorized than combining them with the game of baseball! Mrs. Hutter’s fifth-grade math students started their year off playing Multiplication Baseball! Mrs. Hutter “pitched” the tables, the students “swung” their answers and ran the bases- answering a table at each base! This activity was the perfect way to get up and moving in math class as well as a great way to practice these ever important facts that are the key to success in fifth-grade math and beyond!
Last Year, Best Year
The GWA Class of 2024 Senior Retreat was filled with camaraderie, fun and games, team spirit, reflection, and learning. Under the guidance of our devoted faculty and staff, our seniors fully embraced the purpose of the retreat – they gained new perspectives on mentorship and leadership, spoke openly, set intentions, and truly bonded with their classmates. This shared experience is intended to elevate the senior class and set them up for a fulfilling final year at GWA. The Class of 2024 is ready to lead and serve as role models for our younger Bulldogs.
Leading the Way
Our 2023 GWA Marching Bulldog Band leadership team enjoyed a three-day leadership retreat up in Sky Valley in mid-July, to train and prepare our new section leaders for the upcoming season. This group is ready to lead by example and teach their peers.

A huge thank you to April Mealor for opening her home to us for our retreat and to Mary Smith and Lori Volk for joining us and serving as our awesome band moms/chaperones for the trip! It was a great kick off to our 2023 marching season and launching our new competitive show: "Rome...Way of the Warrior."
Welcome to GWA!
Every year, the counseling department brings together new middle and upper school students for lunch. This is a great time to check in on their experience at GWA and help them connect with other new students during the school day. Have your students mark their calendars and join us for pizza and fun!

George Walton Academy is proud to sponsor our next blood drive with the American Red Cross on Friday, September 8. GWA faculty, staff and families are encouraged to donate.
Just some food for thought:
• Approximately 29,000 units of red blood cells are needed every day in the U.S.
• A single-car accident victim can require as many as 100 units of blood.
• Every 2 seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood and or platelets.
If you are healthy and eligible, please come out to donate. Click HERE for details.
