John Harington
The man we can credit this amazing and innovative invention to is John Harington. He invented it in 1596 and gave the new invention life.
FUN FACT - A man who made a toilet, later on, was named Thomas Crapper, hence the phrase crap.
How did it work?
The original design was a two-foot deep oval and was waterproofed with pitch. It also required seven and a half gallons of water per use, so it wasn't great for the environment, but it is better than dumping fecal matter in the streets. The original toilet that Harington invented was designed for 20 people to use in between flushes.
