EHMS Weekly Update 6/10/22
Principals' Message
We can't believe the last week of school is upon us! It has been a tremendous year for our students. We have come a very long way since last year where our students' experience of middle school was vastly different than the opportunities we have been able to provide for them now. We have been able to hold events, concerts, field trips and celebrations. Our Capstone Convention is just one example that showcases the time and commitment that our students and staff have devoted to teaching and learning this year. We are immensely proud of each of our students. We look forward in continuing to celebrate throughout next week!
As always, thank you for your continued partnership.
Best,
Christina & Emily

A Look Into Our Building
Festival of Flight
On Monday, June 6th, our 6th grade students got to experience EHMS’s 1st annual Festival of Flight! The 6th grade students have been studying flight science, aviation, and aeronautics in their Technology Education class. The Festival of Flight was the culminating activity for the entire grade. The students spent the afternoon traveling to different stations to experience a different element of flight and aviation.
At station 1, students were greeted by three different professionals from the industry. All three are residents of East Hampton.
Thomas Barry: Mechanical Engineer at Pratt and Whitney
Alex Reyes: Quality Control Electrical Specialist at Sikorsky
Wes Owen: Commercial Airline Pilot for United
They all spoke to the students about the jobs that they do and what kind of education and training they needed to get those jobs. They also fielded questions from students. The students even got to play a little trivia game for some great prizes provided by Pratt and Whitney.
At station 2, the students went outside to meet Michael Gosselin from Cromwell. Mike is a Master R/C pilot. He has been building and flying R/C planes for 50 years. Mike had 6 or 7 different planes with him that he had built himself. He talked to the students about what it takes to build an R/C plane. He then showed them how all the controls work, and how each plane flies. He did some flight demonstrations and even allowed some of the students to take the controls and try their hand at flying!
At station 3, the students finally had the opportunity to launch the model rockets that they built during Technology Education class. With the help of Technology Education Teacher Chris Briggs, and Town resident and experienced model rocket builder and launcher Chris Mansfield, the students got their rockets ready and were able to take the launch controller into their hands. With a 3-2-1 countdown, rocket after rocket blasted into the sky! Over 100 rockets went off on the lower field that afternoon. While a few didn’t make it too far, a majority of the rockets went straight up 150-200 feet into the air and settled back down on the field with a little help from a parachute ribbon.
Overall, the students seemed to have an excellent afternoon experiencing first hand all of the science, math, and engineering that they had learned during their Technology Education class. The student’s behavior and representation of EHMS was also first class! Many of the volunteers commented about how well behaved and respectful all the students were. The students also asked excellent well thought out questions throughout. It was a pleasure hosting this event, and we all hope to keep it going for our students for many years to come!

Mrs. Kalisz’s seventh graders are finishing up their final writing unit of the year, Writing about Reading. Students will create companion books for their favorite novels.
6th Grade Airline Trail Field Trip
The sixth graders walked the beautiful Airline Trail to Center School. Before taking off on the walk, students painted rocks, wrote positive messages on notecards and decorated containers and put flowers in them. These creations were dropped off along the trail to businesses in town. After a visit to the Senior Center, we arrived at Center School. It was so nice to see some former teachers. Recess was much appreciated as well as a snack before the hike back.
Spreading kindness and exercising = a great afternoon!

PTO SPOTLIGHT
The EHMS PTO is looking for new members to join us for the upcoming school year. The 2022-2023 school year will be a transition year for the PTO as most of our members will have 8th graders and be moving on to the high school the following year. We would love to welcome new members to our board and to work together to introduce you to the big events we help run each year as well as entertain ideas for new events and fundraisers. The work of the PTO helps support school spirit, programming and events, teacher appreciation and mini-grant requests. We cannot do it without you! We already have two exciting events on the calendar for September, a back to school night at Dunkin' Donuts Park and Pantherfest! If you are interested in joining our board or volunteering in any capacity throughout the year, please contact us at PTOehms@gmail.com with your contact information.
