Principal's Message
Dear OMS Community,
I hope you had a restful and relaxing Thanksgiving! I wanted to share an update regarding the end of Trimester 1 grades and a trend we are seeing in the building with perfume sprays.
Today marks the end of Trimester 1 which means we are one-third of the way through the school year. Grades for T1 are officially closed. Teachers will be finalizing their grades and then T1 report cards will be issued next Friday, December 8th. Trimester 2 starts on Monday which means a fresh start academically for all students.
As a reminder in middle school, students' final year (F1) grade in a course is an average of their trimester grades. Students who are failing two or more of their core classes for F1 must attend summer school. If students are failing all of their core classes for F1, then they are in danger for retention. Core classes include English Language Arts (ELA), Math, Science, and Social Studies. A failing grade (F) is a 59% or below.
If students need academic help, all of our teachers stay after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:15-2:45pm. Students can stay after school with a teacher to get additional help academically. Parents/guardians, if you have any questions regarding grades, you can reach out directly to the teachers. Please wait with any questions until after report cards are issued next Friday as they are still working on inputting the last few grades of Trimester 1.
Finally, a reminder that no perfume sprays are allowed in the building. With 840 students and 100 staff in the building, we have to be mindful of health needs and these sprays and scents can cause real health issues and disruptions during the day. Students can bring in stick deodorant or lotion, but sprays of any kind need to be left at home. Parents/guardians, please talk to your students about this and make sure they leave sprays at home. Thank you!
I hope to see some of you this Saturday for the OMS PTSO's Craft and Vendor Fair! (See flyer below for more information)
Sincerely,
Mrs. Crowley
Important Dates
Upcoming Events
OMS Spirit Day!
The OMS Student Council organized Spirit Day on the half day before Thanksgiving Break. Students participated in classroom games such as Bingo and Kahoot! with their Knight Time advisory groups. Each grade took a turn going to the Cafetorium and Gym for special activities. In the Cafetorium, students played Minute-To-Win-It games. In the Gym, students participated in musical chairs and tug-of-war. Students earned points for their team and their grade throughout the day. We had such a fun day coming together as a school and demonstrating our school spirit!
Grade 8 was the overall winner and Team 8C was the winning team for the day, congratulations!
SHS Marching Band Performs for OMS
On Tuesday, November 21st, OMS made the trip up to SHS to watch a performance by the SHS Marching Band. Grade 7 and 8 students are eligible to join the SHS Marching Band. About 40% of the SHS Marching Band is made up of OMS students (pictured below); they were introduced to the student body before the performance. Congratulations to the SHS Marching Black Knights on a successful season!
October Students of the Month
As part of our school's PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports) program, five students on each team are recognized as Students of the Month for demonstrating traits of readiness, responsibility, and respect. Grade 6 Gillette Field Trip
Grade 6 students had the opportunity to go on a field trip to Gillette Stadium to learn more about STEM in the context of sports. Last week, Team 6B went on the field trip. Teams 6A and 6C went earlier this month.
OMS students completed the "Let's Have a Ball" STEM module. Students were presented with a sports-related technological problem regarding football measurements and ball pressure. They were tasked with a scenario where they had to help a game manufacturer choose the correct sports ball for its new game. Students were given specific criteria regarding the ball’s performance requirements. They were asked to test several different types of sports balls and make recommendations based on the outcome of each test. While at Gillette Stadium, students also had the opportunity to tour the Patriots Hall of Fame museum.
