We are excited to introduce a new and convenient way to purchase meals in our cafeteria. XXXX School will be using the IdentiMetrics System help us protect student information and save student’s time. The new system uses a biometric ID management system that will allow students to pay for meals with a finger scan, speeding up lines and ensuring that no one can charge items to another student’s account.
As with any new system, we understand there are important questions families and students may have. We will do our best to answer those for you in the question-and-answer section below.
What is biometric identification? Biometric identification is an automated method of identifying a person based upon physical or behavioral characteristics. Our school has selected the IdentiMetrics System because it is secure, accurate, cost-effective and non-intrusive. Visit www.identimetrics.net to learn more.
How does biometrics work? We will be using finger scanning biometrics similar to your smart phone. The software uses a scanner to map certain unique points on the finger to create and store individual templates for each student. The templates are converted to a unique number and stored in the school’s database. The software uses the numbers to match students to their accounts.
What about the privacy of our students? The software scans the finger for identification. At no time is a fingerprint image stored. Instead, the software creates a template of the unique points on the finger. The templates are protected by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the same Federal Law that protects all student records. When a student graduates or is no longer enrolled in Jefferson County Schools, the templates are deleted. Students are NOT being fingerprinted. In addition, fingerprints cannot be recreated or delivered to any agency - governmental or otherwise.
It is important to us that our students find school and educational and rewarding place to learn. If you DO NOT want your student participating in this program, please complete and sign below and return this sheet to the student’s homeroom.
Thank you for your support.
Sincerely,
Dylan Beitz
