April 2021 - Building Updates
LFHS UPDATES
Hello Lake Fenton Families,
I am amazed that we are at the brink of Spring Break and our second semester is at its halfway mark. We have gone through full shutdowns, schedule changes and a myriad of athletic and academic pauses throughout this school year. To say my first year as principal has been a rollercoaster is an understatement!
But - I was also privileged to watch our fall and winter athletes dominate in their fields including football, cheer, basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, swim, cross country, soccer and more to come. I was privileged to watch our academic scholars take top prizes in the Genesee County Spelling bee, academic scholarships, robotics and Student of the Month recognition. I was privileged to sit in on choir and band classes and view talented art and digital content from our students' efforts. I have watched teachers tackle brand new technology and different platforms of hybrid learning - while making them powerful and engaging. I am humbled and amazed to be a part of this Lake Fenton Family.
We started the year 2021 feeling hopeful and I truly believe we are ready to tackle the task of filling our spring months with even more learning and leading across Lake Fenton High School. I hope you will join me in finishing STRONG Blue Devils!
Please take the time to read through this important newsletter detailing upcoming activities and opportunities available to your child. If you have any questions, please contact our office at (810)591-9591.
Have a wonderful and relaxing Spring Break filled with sunshine and fresh air and we will see you all right back here on Monday, April 5th.
Proud Principal,
Kate VanHouten Ed. S

LFHS SECOND SEMESTER UPDATES - WHAT I NEED TO KNOW
April is our month of state testing across the district. I will be sending out a state testing newsletter the week after spring break to update families on our state testing protocols, but it is important to prepare now for the days of state testing for ALL our students here at LFHS.
- Sophomores and Juniors will be required to attend testing IN PERSON on Tuesday, April 13th no matter what educational platform they typically follow. ALL students will be guaranteed six foot social distancing on that day in testing rooms.
- Freshman and Juniors will be required to attend testing IN PERSON on Wednesday, April 14th no matter what educational platform they typically follow. ALL students will be guaranteed six foot social distancing on that day in testing rooms.
- Seniors will not be required to attend testing on either days but will be working on volunteer hours, job shadowing or placement testing opportunities extended to them.
Spring testing can be a stressful week for students and we want to provide as much information to prepare in advance for all our families so that we can have a successful experience. We will post room assignments for testing on our main office windows as students enter the building and additional details in the weeks ahead.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES AT LFHS - EXAMS AND GRADE WEIGHTING
We traditionally offer AP US history, AP Calculus, AP Language, AP Literature, AP Studio Art and will offer AP Biology next year. We plan to add AP Chemistry soon so that we have many rigorous course offerings across subjects for Lake Fenton students.
The scale would be as follows:
- A=5.0 (traditionally 4.0)
- B=4.0 (traditionally 3.0)
- C=3.0 (traditionally 2.0)
- D=2.0 (traditionally 1.0)
- E=0.0 (traditionally 0.0)
Our AP exams will begin in May and June of 2021. Please see the attached flyer detailing our AP exam requirements and deadlines if your child is currently enrolled in any of our AP courses offered this year.
