Welcome Back!
Dear Horning Students and Families,
As Principal, I am honored and excited to be part of the Horning Middle School community.
I would like to welcome you to Horning Middle School, home of the Hawks. I want to extend a special welcome to all new and returning HMS students and their families.
As I embark on my fourth year at Horning, my goal is to build upon the success of the house model that was launched during the 2018-19 school year.
At the heart of the house structure at Horning is a dedicated school wide advisory period. During the upcoming school year this will take place Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 7:45 a.m., and Wednesdays from 7:30 a.m. to 7:55 a.m. We see the advisory period as critically important to ensuring student’s needs, both academically and social/emotionally, are met
Your child’s advisor will be you and your student’s point person within the house system. Your child’s advisor will be there to help you navigate through any questions and concerns that may arise. As you view your learner's schedule, the advisor’s name will appear in the “Advisory” section. Please note that this will be finalized later in August and may not appear on your learner’s schedule at this time.
I look forward to a successful year for all of our learners. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the main office at 262-970-3305.
Respectfully,
Mr. Robert Blessington
Principal

Are you signed up to take 6th grade band in middle school?
Are you signed up to take 6th grade band in middle school? Have no fear, the Super Lesson is here!
The event will begin with a brief overview of the band program for parents and students. Following the introductions, we will break up into smaller groups with other students that play the same or similar instruments. Parents are encouraged to sit in on the lessons as well!
During the regular school day, all of the instruments are in the same band class, so this is the best opportunity for students to receive instruction specialized for their instruments. In previous years, the students that received this specialized instruction have always appreciated learning these basics ahead of time.
TOPICS COVERED
How do I assemble my instrument without damaging it?
How do I hold my instrument correctly?
How do I make a sound on my instrument?
How do I read music for the first notes on my instrument?
How do I take care of my instrument to avoid expensive repairs?
How do I clean and pack up my instrument after playing it?

Jennifer Kim - Art
Joan Koenig - Science 8B
I am Joan Koenig. I have been teaching middle school Math and Science for more than 13 years. Most of that time has been in private schools in the Racine area. I have been married for 35 years and have 3 sons. In my free time I like to travel, read books, quilt, cook and go camping, especially with my family.
Norma Casas - Dual Language 7
My name is Norma Casas and am excited to be a part of the Horning community. I am the new 7th grade Dual Language teacher focusing on Mathematics and Science, as well as, the 8th grade Dual Language Science teacher. I have 12 years of teaching experience working with language learners and enjoy guiding students to use their voice and strengths to enhance their learning experiences.
My family and I recently relocated to Waukesha County from Berwyn, IL. We are taken by the beauty and people of the community. I have two children, Matthew and Fabiana. I enjoy spending time with my family, listening to music, watching movies, tasting new foods, and short distance hikes.
I look forward to meeting you.
Marlene Figueroa - Instructional Coach
Cynthia Diaz - Dual Language 6
My name is Cynthia Díaz. I was born on the tropical island of Puerto Rico. I moved to Florida when I was going into first grade. I later went back to Puerto Rico and got my Bachelor's Degree in K-8 Elementary and English as a Second Language in 2010. During the 2015-2016 school year I received an additional license in Bilingual Education. I have worked with students of all ages, from infants to college students. After teaching second grade for four years at Bethesda Elementary School, I will be at Horning teaching sixth grade.
When I am not at school, I am at home with my kids Enzo and Mia and my husband Nelson. I also have three pets, two cats (Berlioz and Yoshi), and a dog ( Mr. Peabody). We like to do fun things as a family, like going to the park, the library, discovering new places and learning jiu jitsu together.
Melanie Hernandez - Special Education DL7
I am a born and raised Texan who loves Wisconsin so much; I don’t mind being called a Cheesehead. I have lived in Waukesha, previously, for eight years and taught at Horning for several years before my family decided to head back to Texas. We were supposed to stay there for good, since all our family is down south, but my husband received a job offer he couldn’t refuse and so here we are again. Luckily for me, Horning accepted me back and I feel
humbled to be back home, to be a Horning Hawk again.
I have a masters degree in Curriculum & Instruction and have been an educator for 16 years. I have volunteered in different capacities throughout my career to help students find their voice whether it be in a drama club, a gardening club, or book club and more. I love what I do and will work hard each day to make sure each student I run into or work with knows that they have the power within them to be the best version of themselves.
I am married and have three children ages 18, 16, and 13. I love to sing Mariachi music and enjoy spending my summers reading for personal enjoyment and hanging out with my family as much as I can.
Go Pack Go!
Taya Spitzer - Educational Assistant
My name is Taya Spitzer and I was recently hired as a Special Ed Aide at Horning Middle School which is actually just a short walk from my home. I have been a special ed para for a year now. I received an associate degree from WCTC earlier this summer, and I am transferring to Alverno College this fall to earn a bachelor's degree in 1-9 education as well as k-12 special education. I hope to be a special education teacher in the next 1-2 years! In my spare time I tutor students who use RPM and spend a lot of time with my family and friends. On the weekends I volunteer at my church. I am so excited for the school year to begin!
Danielle Hawkins - Special Eduation FLIGHT
Hello, Horning MS!
My name is Danielle Hawkins and I am a special education teacher, working with the FLIGHT program this upcoming school year. I have been teaching for 10 years, and am beyond excited about this new opportunity of teaching and learning!
I like to run, work out, and play/watch sports (go Brewers/Badgers/Bucks)! I will be running my first full marathon this Fall in Chicago, and have been working hard to make it a great experience! I also love coaching basketball, cross country, and track and field. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family and friends doing just about anything outdoors. Looking forward to working with your students and the Horning MS Community! Go Hawks!
Adam Dalpra - Math 6A
Darin Haugom - Math 8B
Lisa Morowski - Business Education
Thad Schmitt - Math 8A
Kaylee Gendrich - ELA 6A
I've had the wonderful opportunity to teach in the School District of Waukesha for nine years. I have taught at Banting Elementary School for eight years and this will be my first year at Horning. A little known fact about me is that I graduated from Waukesha North High School and went to Waukesha schools. Waukesha is an exceptional district and I am thrilled to be back as a teacher!
I graduated from Lake Forest College in 2011 with a degree in Elementary Education and History. I was also a college athlete and played softball. I recently received my Master's in Reading Curriculum and Instruction from Carroll University in 2016 and last year I completed my certification in Reading Recovery.
I love sports! When I'm not spending time in the classroom you can usually find me coaching high school softball. Last spring I was able to coach my team all the way to the State Tournament for the second year in a row! It was one of my proudest moments as a high school softball coach. I continue to play softball during the summer in various leagues around Waukesha. I am a fan of all Wisconsin sports teams! Go Brewers, Go Badgers, and Go Packers!
I have a very silly and lazy dog named Maggie who I spend a lot of time walking. She loves to lay outside, devour many treats, and sleep on the couch.
Jamie Prestosa - Math/Science 7A
Hello Hawk families!
My name is Jamie Prestosa and I am so excited to be a part of the Horning family! Even though this is my first year at Horning, this year will be my eighth year working with middle school students and tenth year teaching. Before teaching at HMS, I was a math and english teacher in Milton, a math teacher in New Berlin, and an elementary teacher in Waukesha and Mukwonago.
Personally, I have a family that is really important to me. My husband and I have two girls, one that is four years old, and one that is one year old. We live in Oconomowoc and love spending time together. Our favorite things to do together include walking around the many lakes, playing at the park, and going to the beach.
In my free time, I enjoy running and walking, traveling to new places, and trying new food. My most favorite pastime is reading. I can often be caught reading young adult fiction because it almost always has a happy ending.
I cannot wait to meet all of the wonderful families and staff that are a part of Horning! I look forward to an amazing year of growth and success!
