Spotlight on Social-Emotional Learning
You may have heard your child talk about a new spot at Lincoln Elementary. Our school is fortunate to have access to a regulation room that we call The Lion's Den. Students and staff have access to this room that is a safe place to come calm down when they are agitated or upset. It can also be a place that they can come try to wake up or get their body ready for the day if they are lethargic or feeling sluggish.
There are many sensory resources in this room that assist with calming or energizing our Lions.
There is a procedure for using this room that includes the following:
1. Complete an entry form, indicating your current "Zone" and what got you to that zone.
2. Get a timer and set it for 3 minutes.
3. Choose the activities that you need to help you move to the "green zone" and become ready to learn
4. Turn in your entry form and return to class.
Students then choose five calming or energizing activities to help them regulate their emotional state and feel like they are focused and calm and ready to do their best in the classroom.
Regulating our emotions is a lifeskill that we all have to master. To be honest, sometimes as adults we aren't real good at it. Our Lions are being taught the importance of self regulation and recognizing when your body signals that it is not calm and ready to learn.
Noticing that your child struggles with regulation? Try some of the following activities at home that we use with our staff and students right here in our Lion's Den.
Calming Activities: Breathing Box Exercise, Blowing Bubbles, Rocking in a chair with a weighted blanket, Turning the lights down and listening to soothing sounds, coloring, using therapy putty or play-doh
Energizing Activities: Jumping Jacks, Jumping on a trampoline, Stationary Bike, Push Ups or High Knees
Don't forget to call in your child's absence to our office at 267-7474.
Lion of Legacy Monthly Winners
Each day we celebrate students who are exhibiting that Lion of Legacy mindset and character.
At the close of every month, we draw the name of one student that has been recognized for being a Lion of Legacy. This lucky winner gets lunch out with Mrs. Lunsford - a special time to celebrate their character and talk about the ups and downs of school and life. Next month we'll choose two winners, one from K-3rd grade and one from 4th-6th.
Congratulations to our very first Lion of Legacy winner for the month of August:
Sixth Grader, Annie Nightingale in Ms. Blocher's class.
Way to show your character and make a positive impact on those around you Annie! Keep up the great ork!
