From the Director's Chair
As I reflect on the first few months of the school year, I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the incredible start we’ve had here at Hartley. It has been amazing to witness the enthusiasm and wonder of the students as they explore the great outdoors. Our dedicated team has worked tirelessly to create meaningful experiences, fostering a love of learning and nature.
Our staff would like to express our deepest thanks to all of the students and teachers who have joined us for this amazing experience. It is truly heartening to see the positive impact that our program is making in the lives of these young minds.
Looking ahead, I am excited about the adventures and discoveries that the rest of the school year holds for us. There are countless opportunities for growth, learning, and fun in the great outdoors.
Wishing you all a Happy Thanksgiving and looking forward to an amazing year ahead!
Naturalists Notes On Native American Heritage
What is “Native American Heritage Month” and why do we recognize it?
Native American month was signed into law in 1990 designating the month of November. However, many states have been recognizing “Native American Day” for many years. Native American month is an opportunity for many to learn about and appreciate the contributions from the ORIGINAL people who lived in this country. Not just throughout history, but as the culture continues to carry on, and the impact this group continues to have.
Here at Hartley, we provide an opportunity for our guests to learn about how these people lived, quite well, for over 10,000 years in what we now call the United States. How they used the land and resources around them to provide appropriate winter and summer clothing, build, heat, and even insulate their homes, and dispel the stereotype that life was just one big “campout”. We discuss the cultural differences between tribes and regions and provide our guests with the opportunity to experience “hands on” learning with our Winter village, Teepee, and Totem Pole.
We would love the opportunity to share with you and hope you take advantage of ANY opportunity this month to recognize the contributions of this proud culture.

Introducing "Staff Picks: Kids Edition"!
We’re thrilled to kick off this exciting new segment where each month, a Hartley OEC staff member or visiting teacher will share their favorite kids’ book. Our inaugural pick comes from Eric Rutherford, Hartley OEC Program Director.
Eric has chosen “Alfie” by Thyra Heder, a captivating books that holds a special place in our hearts here at Hartley. This delightful tale serves as a prelude to the introduction of one of our resident turtles. The students and staff alike have fallen in love with this enchanting story.
Back in 2021, the Hartley OEC staff had the privilege of participating in a live reading of “Alfie” with the author herself.
We hope you enjoy Eric’s pick as much as we do and look forward to sharing more beloved children’s books in the months to come. Happy reading!
