Brentwood Elementary Mission Statement
~Achievement~Actions~Attitudes~
What does a principal do?
The first weeks of school may be a whirlwind to parents. Getting their little ones back into a routine, keeping track of homework, gym shoes, schedules, and lunches can be difficult the first few weeks of August. THAT'S the same for the staff at a school - getting back into a routine, while handling everything else that comes your way!
Lets ask that title question again: What does a principal do? OUR principal does all of the above PLUS reads to your children. This is one of the special activities she holds dear to her heart. From all of us at Brentwood to all of you at home, thank you for sharing the gift that is your child(ren) with us from 8:50 in the morning until 3:50 in the afternoon. Please know we feel honored to have this privilege!
Mrs. Walker, principal of Brentwood, enjoyed story time in a few classes today and was excited to share this special time with the students - the reason we all do what we do! Please enjoy the following picture of Mrs. Walker reading to Mrs. Gray's 4th grade class.
School Pictures - Wednesday, August 23rd
If you would like to pay online for your pictures you may pre-pay on DMH Photographics website HERE. (Online order note: REMEMBER TO STILL COMPLETE AN ORDER FORM TO SEND IN ON PICTURE DAY. RECORD THE PREPAY ORDER NUMBER IN THE AREA PROVIDED ON THE FORM.)
Regardless of payment option: online, check or cash - an order form must be completed and sent in to your child's teacher BEFORE the time of their picture. Yearbook order forms will come home in February. Thanks!
From the Principal's Desk
At Brentwood, we believe that every student can and will learn. We believe in the statement "not yet" instead of "can't", "won't" or "never will". We believe in GROWTH, for everyone! This year we are all about GROWTH MINDSET! (The following is copied from a letter Mrs. Walker is sending home to every parent soon!)
Growth Mindset is a concept developed by Carol Dweck, a professor at Stanford University. It is the belief that a person's abilities and intelligence can be developed through practice, hard work, dedication, and motivation.
What is a Fixed Mindset?
A fixed mindset is the notion that intelligence and talent alone will lead to success. People with a fixed mindset believe that these things are "fixed" and cannot be developed or improved upon. The belief you are born with it or not, and nothing can change that.
Why is having a growth mindset important?
Research has shown that children who have a fixed mindset are more likely to:
- Fear failure
- Give up on tasks they feel are too difficult
- Ignore feedback
- Avoid challenges
- Feel threatened by the success of others
Children who have a growth mindset are more likely to:
- Learn from their mistakes
- Be motivated to succeed
- Put forth more effort
- Take challenges head on
- Take risks
- Seek feedback
- Learn more
- Learn faster
- Believe in themselves and in others
- Practice
What can parents do to encourage a growth mindset?
- Encourage risk taking - "I know that was hard but I like how you tried it"
- Praise effort - "I can tell you did your best here and didn't give up"
- Demonstrate belief in your child and yourself - "We may not have it yet, but we will soon"
- Look and recognize the growth made every day. - "You did one more than yesterday."
Total Solar Eclipse ~ August 21, 2017
Solar Eclipse
On Monday, August 21 Indiana residents will be able to witness the amazing site of a Total Eclipse, where the moon will completely cover the sun. This will be the first Total Eclipse seen by the United States in 38 years. It will occur 1:30-3:30 p.m. with the total eclipse occurring around 2:24 p.m.
Brentwood students will witness this phenomenon. They will be inside watching the eclipse live on the classroom smartboards via the NASA website. NASA has special cameras that can safely capture the eclipse and broadcast it to our classrooms. Our window blinds will be open so that students can see the world darken while they safely watch sun move behind the moon.

Has Your Address Changed?
Have you moved recently? If your child rides the bus, we want to make sure your child is picked up on schedule and dropped off safely to your home. If you have changed addresses since you did the online registration in PowerSchool, we will need to have you fill out a transportation form so we can pass the information to the transportation department so your child's bus route can be updated.
You can find this form on our website. From the main page, click MENU, and then DOCUMENTS. Please return this form to the main office as soon as you can, so the appropriate changes can be made. Call us if you have any questions!

The games will be played in April & May on Sundays and some Saturdays. 6 year olds are welcome to try out for the 7 U team.

Become a Brentwood Volunteer
1. Every volunteer, field trip chaperone, or classroom party volunteer must have a background check completed through PCSC. Many of your completed these forms when you enrolled your children online this year as the forms were included. If you still need to fill one out for this year please contact the office well in advance of your first visit to do this.
2. Every volunteer must also complete a PCSC Confidentiality Volunteer Agreement in the office upon their first time volunteering each year.
3. Every visitor to our building during school hours must check-in at the reception desk and be entered into our Safe Visitor system. The very fist time you visit you must have your Driver's License or State Issued ID Card which will be scanned into the computer. Most likely you will NOT need it again upon subsequent visits because the system stores your information. (However, should a glich appear in the system and it is required of you it would be more convenient on you if you had your ID with you.) Every visitor is photographed at the same time they are checked in upon their first visit also.
Thank you for your flexibility as we continue to learn this software during our second year of its use. We know your first priority, as ours in the office, is the safety of all of our children.
(Lunch Room visitors will sit at a specially designated table with only their child and therefore will only be checked into our Safe Visitor system (#3) above.) They are not required to complete steps 1-2 above unless they want to volunteer in a classroom or small group setting, chaperone a field trip, or help out at PTO run classroom parties or events.)
