Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
It has been great to get back into the swing of things after Winter Break. One of my favorite things about my job is getting into classrooms. It is amazing to see the variety of classes and the breadth and depth of the learning occurring daily at CHS.
There are so many ways for students to find something that sparks their passion. I encourage students to get involved. This week, I would like to spotlight our robotics team, our ski team, and our unified basketball team. We also hosted a successful FAFSA workshop last week with an amazing turn out. Check out their pictures below. Speaking of some of the best parts of my job, attending unified basketball games is heartwarming and uplifting. The talented athletes and students and community support makes for a magical atmosphere. Please come and support unified basketball.
Coming up next week is our CTE summit on Friday, January 19th from 9 am- noon. This is an opportunity to highlight all of the career and technical education opportunities at CHS. The community is invited to tour our state-of-the-art facilities, see our students in action, and meet our educators. We hope to see you there!
There is also important information in this newsletter about upcoming conferences and state testing. A quick reminder that we do not have school on Monday, January 15.
Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in the upcoming Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science.
Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
We will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates for your students’ grade level and ways to support your student’s success. You can find more information on our district State Assessment webpage. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.

Robotics Team
The Rose City Robotics League First Tech Challenge was at Grant High School. 17 teams competed over 22 matches. The goal is to get as many points as possible using autonomous controls and then team driven controls to complete game tasks. The team found a structural issue with the robot but took it in stride and had a great time coming up with solutions for next time.

Our state champion dance team is putting on a kids dance clinic on January 15. Please see the flier above for more information.
Boys Basketball
This past week the boys basketball team has dominated league opponents Hillsboro and Parkrose. On Friday (1/5/24) in our league double-header, the boys easily beat Hillsboro 77-36. On Monday (1/8/24) the boys handled Parkrose 68-46.

Unified basketball is back for another season. On Monday, January 8th the Unified team started their season in front of a packed gym. The team played against Oregon City in an exciting showdown. This team put up 34 points to Oregon City’s 37 points. Our next game is against Wilsonville high school on January 16th.
Swimming
Last week, Canby swimmers won their fourth meet in a row. Canby HS Swimmers hosted the Hood River Valley High School on Thursday January 4th. Both the Boys and Girls teams came out with wins. Canby Girls won 102-68 and the Boys won 99-71. Every point makes a difference in a dual meet and there were a lot of swimmers putting us over the top with a point here and two points there.
Boys Wrestling
Last Friday the Boys wrestling team competed at the Earl Gillis Invitational where they beat #1 ranked (5A) Thurston 42-31. They lost in the Finals to #1 Ranked (6A) Newberg 24-50.
