Weekly Update November 3, 2023

We are fortunate to have outdoor play spaces at both our centers, and we will make every effort to play outside daily! Our schedule has 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon scheduled for outdoor play time daily. Please send your child with a warm coat, mittens or gloves, and any other necessary accessories to play outside. When the snow comes, we will still go out, so please send boots. We can work with the children on changing into their boots and back into their shoes, and putting on your own coat and mittens daily is great practice!

We will not go out if it is actively raining, snowing more than just a light flurry, or if the playground is extremely wet from previous rain or snow melt. Otherwise, we typically go out as long as the temperature feels warmer than 20 degrees. If you have any concerns about outside time, please speak to your BCBA.

Last Friday, our team got together in Burton for a Professional Development (PD) day. We greatly appreciate the efforts of Leigh and Kendall, our speech pathologists from Leigh Harter Speech Services, who provided our team with educational presentations on Gestalt Language Learners and Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC.) These topics are relevant for a lot of our learners and will help our entire team approach speech and language goals in a more productive way every day.

In addition to those great talks, our team also invested time into discussing and developing our company values, learning more about diversity and inclusion, and having a delicious lunch from Italia Gardens. We schedule about 4-5 PD days per year to ensure that our team always keep learning!

We like to check in with parents about once per year on this topic to be sure that our newsletter and other means of communication are meeting your needs. You may have noticed that our center in Brighton has gotten a little busier lately! We are hiring another Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in order to expand our services. Please share our career opportunities page if you know an experienced BCBA.

We have adjusted our calendar slightly for our Holiday Break in December - we will have a break from Wednesday, December 20th to Tuesday, January 2nd. We will return for therapy on Wednesday, January 3rd, not on January 2nd as previously listed on the calendar.

The U of M Flint Inclusive Trick or Treat event was a great success! There were over 900 people in attendance, and over 200 volunteers. Our team had 8 volunteers, and we hosted a Mario Brothers inspired table for trick or treaters! We saw several familiar faces amongst the trick or treaters and had a great time! We are already planning for next year's table!

We have several staff who started working with us this year. We'll feature one each week in the newsletter leading up to the end of the year.

Lily started at the Strive Center in April 2023. She previously worked in food service for three years before beginning to work in ABA.

Lily attended Grand Blanc High school and graduated in 2020. She is currently attending Central Michigan University for her Bachelor’s degree. She is on track to graduate in December 2023.

Lily enjoys art, kayaking, spending time outdoors and going to events.
