UNIT 4 - Sharing the Planet (February 2023)
Sharing the Planet
Central Idea: Developing an understanding of local and global issues leads to taking action.
An inquiry into:
- The purpose of the UN Global Goals
- The issues that exist locally and globally
- How our actions can lead to change and sustainability
Inquiry questions:
What is the purpose of the UN Global Goals?
What issues exist locally and globally and why do we need to understand these issues?
How do our actions lead to change?
Mathematics
As part of our inquiry into Sharing the Planet, we are learning about fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students will explore the relationship between fractions and decimals, they will make connections to how these representations are displayed in the real world. Students will investigate and inquire into performing operations on fractions and they will understand the concept of fraction equivalency. We will go on to explore problems involving ratios, and they will continue to build their problem-solving skills whilst working collaboratively on a range of problems in a variety of real-world contexts.
Language
In this unit, students will learn how to use persuasive language through debating and presenting. We will look at a variety of persuasive texts and real-world examples of speeches. Students will then apply their skills and knowledge of the Global Goals and persuasive techniques by writing their own speeches on an area that they are passionate about and performing these to an audience. Students will use the Global Goals as a further provocation for deeper inquiry.
