Week 3 - Checking In
What Makes You Strong?
Your Strengths, Not Your Skills, Determine Who You Are.
Hi Class,
Below I've posted one of my favorite videos about what it means to build your life around what makes you feel strong. I know some of you may be discouraged, while others elated, by the results of last week's MyFoundationLab results. So, why bother learning about our strengths? The video below will answer that question - and the answer is so much more profound than simply doing well at a task, like reading or writing. It has to do with your life.
Sadly, very few people actually know their strengths, and even fewer get to live their life contributing those strengths in their work. I hope this video changes your perspective about your own personal strengths. I hope that it places your strengths at the center of the vision of your life. You are at your best when you spend your time doing what makes you feel strong.
Online Student Toolbox
One tool I've been trying out this week is Forest, an iOS ($1.99) & Android (free) app that rewards you for focused work time. The premise is simple - you plant a tree and as you work, your tree begins to grow. However, if you leave the app to, say, check social media or email, your tree begins to wither. Over time, as you plant trees, they begin to form a forest that provides a visual about your work habits and suggests ways to grow your trees. Work hard and the app will open up new trees for you to plant, or even use your points to plant a real tree! The idea is simple, which is why I like it - no frills, but rewarding nonetheless! Try it out and let me know if you like it!
