Welcome back, students and parents! We are so glad to see everyone back in school! We hope you had a wonderful and restful summer! We know how difficult it can be for some students to make the transition back into school. Please read below for some helpful tips!
Transition Back to School Tips for Parents
As you and your child prepare to head back to school they may be feeling anxious about returning to in-person learning after being home for the past year. We realize that as parents you are now tasked with reassuring your child that it is safe to return while encouraging them to be safe. Here are some ideas to help you navigate this transition.
Validate their feelings- It is important for you to remember to stay calm and positive as you validate their fears. Allow them the space to express their feelings without feeding into those fears.
Set the tone- Remember that your child will follow your lead. Try not to ask leading questions such as “Are you nervous about going back to school?” Try to answer their questions the best that you can in a calm manner. If you don’t know the answer it is “OK” to acknowledge that but reassure them that you will find out.
Help them think positive-To help younger children, letting them know what you will be doing and how you will stay safe while they are away can help calm those fears. Also, helping them focus on the positive aspects of school. Asking them what are you looking forward to? What did they enjoy that day at school?
Have a routine- Having a predictable routine can help the younger ones feel more secure. One major change may be the morning routine. It helps when you discuss what the new morning routine will look like. This will help your children know what your expectations are and what will be happening. This would also apply to bedtime routines and homework times. Giving them positive reinforcement will help them build self-esteem.
If your child is still struggling with adjusting to in person learning and you feel that they need a little more support please feel free to contact us and we will gladly work with you, the teacher, and your child. If you have any questions regarding the counseling program, please see the attached brochure. Thank you!
