Winter Vacation
Wishing all of our students, families, teachers, and staff a wonderful winter vacation and holiday season! While schools will be closed next week, our offices will be open Wednesday-Friday and that schedule is below. We will see our students back in school on Tuesday, January 2, 2024!
A Special Military Homecoming at OMS
O'Donnell Middle School 8th grade student Darren Mahagan received quite the surprise during lunch on Monday. OMS Principal Katrina Crowley went to the microphone in the cafeteria and said she had a special announcement for Darren and asked him to come up and join her. Once Darren got up to the front of the cafeteria, Mrs. Crowley said she wasn't the one who should make the announcement and said there was a special guest who would make the announcement instead. Darren, who at this point started to figure out what was going on, saw his mother, Breanna Hewson, emerge from the band room in her Army uniform. Ms. Hewson recently joined the Army and had been training in Missouri for the past five months, and other than a brief visit in October, hadn't seen her son. Watch them reunite in this video!
Winter Concerts
Our band and chorus students have been doing an amazing job performing at the winter concerts that were taking place in our schools leading up to the winter vacation. Each elementary school held a concert for 4th and 5th grade, and Stoughton High had its winter band and chorus concert. (The OMS will have its winter concerts in January.) Be sure to check the Stoughton Public Schools Facebook page as we will continue to share photos and videos from these concerts!

OMS National Junior Honor Society Students Visit Wilkins 3rd Grade Classes
On Tuesday, O'Donnell Middle School National Junior Honor Society advisors Allison Walsh and Laura Whittaker took NJHS members to the Wilkins School to partner with students from Christine Bohn, Tracy Gaul, and Jennifer Traverse’s third grade classes. Students participated in a lesson about Ramadan in a “Holidays around the World” unit. They learned that lanterns are an important symbol of guiding light and then created their own lanterns to take home. Third graders then challenged their NJHS partners to a math multiplication facts game. After a wonderful visit, all students are eagerly awaiting their next visits in February and April to continue the relationships they formed!
Dawe School Gingerbread Houses
First grade students at the Dawe School have been working on building gingerbread houses this week out of cardboard, paper, and other household supplies. Impressive work!
Gibbons School Students Giving Back to the Community
Students in Mrs. Catrambone's class at the Gibbons School learned about practicing compassion during the month of December and donated food to St. Anthony's Food Pantry. Great to see our students giving back!
SPS Assists Ahavath Torah in Helping Families This Holiday Season
For the past eight years, Ahavath Torah Congregation in Stoughton, working with the Stoughton Public Schools, has held events to help members of our community in need celebrate Christmas. Last weekend, more than 70 children came through a Christmas drive-thru at the synagogue to see Santa and receive some gifts and goodies the children and their families could enjoy this holiday season. Wilkins School Principal Katie Monahan (second from the right in the back row) and Wilkins School Administrative Assistant Christina Bermudez Hamilton (second from the right in the first row) are the SPS liaisons for this program, helping to coordinate with the other schools and find families who could benefit from this event.
“It is a heartwarming experience to see people of all backgrounds and beliefs come together in a shared feeling of goodwill and community,” Mrs. Monahan said. “We continue to be grateful for the generosity of the congregants of the Ahavath Torah Congregation.”
SHS Senior Alyssa Edwards Signs Letter of Commitment to Play College Softball
Congratulations to Stoughton High senior Alyssa Edwards for signing her letter of commitment to play softball at University of Hartford in Connecticut! Alyssa, a former South School and O'Donnell Middle School student, is a multisport athlete and captain, and vice president of the senior class.
"Alyssa is an exceptional student-athlete and role model. She sets high standards for herself and her teammates, communicates clearly, and supports everyone in her school and athletic community," SHS softball coach Laura Whittaker said.
"Over her high school career, among other accolades, she has been a multi-year Hockomock League All-Star, team MVP, and Enterprise All-Scholastic. A two time team captain, her leadership makes others feel included and important in the program’s drive to league and tournament success," Coach Whittaker continued. "Hartford is extremely lucky to have a student-athlete of Alyssa’s ability and character. We wish her the best of luck in her college career."
There was a signing ceremony for Alyssa last Friday in the SHS gymnasium where she was joined by her parents, family, members of the SHS administration and athletics department, teachers and coaches, as well as a group of her teammates and friends. Take a look at more pictures from the signing ceremony here.
