SOAR to New Heights and Go Where Eagles Dare!
Principal's Corner
Dear Eagle Families,
Learning is in full swing here in Eagleland. We also have some upcoming events I am excited to announce.
First:
Grandparents Day! Friday: We are having a grandparents' day event I am calling: Brunch with Baba (maternal Ukrainian) and Babu (Georgian & paternal Swahili).
- Grandparents will start to enter the building to receive visitor's badges at 0900.
- Please see the brochure below
Trunk or Treat: Woodlawn Academy would like to host a Trunk-or-Treat on campus. We are looking for parents and staff volunteers to decorate their trunks to give our students a safe and convenient Halloween experience before the big day. More info to come!
I love to reflect as part of my commitment to being a lifelong learner. I find that the world, in all its wonder and complexity, is the best teacher. The writings of Marcus Aurelius have helped me to recenter and think about my goals, specifically about obstacles (challenges) that stand in our way.
Marcus Aurelius, the great Roman Emporer wrote, "The mind adapts and converts to its own purposes the obstacle to our acting, the impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way." Meditations, Book 5.20. I believe what he means by this is that challenges will happen regardless of our goals. It is how we face these obstacles, specifically how they inform what we do about them, that should inform how we set goals. Your intentions adapt to this new information from the “obstacle” to your goal, now you have a path forward. The obstacle has become the way!
I challenge all Eagles to start looking at the obstacle as the way. I have seen many students look at classwork, or a social struggle with others and decide to make a plan and push through it. They are informing their goals and actions by the problems they face. This is evidence that they will be well prepared for the world... For this, I am most grateful!
Sincerely
Mr. De La Garza

Global Contexts
Our fifth grade students spent time researching and weighing in on a historic event, the death of the British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. They were given time to research the news and discuss in groups the impact that a monarchy has on society. They also debated on whether a monarchy form of government was still relevant or needed.
They are currently studying different forms of government in their IB Unit of Inquiry: Classification is created by systems. At the end of their unit, students will work in groups to create their own society and choose a form of government and roles within their society.
