Unusual Reading Spot Contest
This summer, think about unusual and interesting places where you can read and snap a picture. It could be a place you are visiting this summer, someplace around town, or just a weird place in your home - it's up to you!
In the spring judges will choose 10 winners to have their photographs blown up to POSTER SIZE and displayed in the library. Photos can be taken anytime in the past year.
We are SO excited to see what you come up with. It is great to see our library filled up with pictures of kids reading!
Details:
o Students should be visibly reading in the photograph
o Photos will need to be a minimum of 3150 x 4200 pixels to be included in the contest (check your camera settings first)
o Submissions should be sent FULL SIZE to forestnorth_library@roundrockisd.org Along with the student's full name and grade for 2016-2017
o Entries can be submitted any time between 5/30/16 and 5/1/17
o Maximum of one (1) entry per student (but multiple students can be in the same photo!)
Check out Gabe over there as a former winner, as an example. He's reading a book about pancakes while eating pancakes - genius!
Bluebonnet Program (grades 3-5)
The Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) program has encouraged Texas children to read more, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books since 1981. Mrs. Fournier was honored to be on the TBA Selection Committee 2012-2015. The committee carefully chooses the top 20 books to become the year’s TBA Master List.
These twenty titles (listed below) are chosen to represent a wide range of interests & reading levels for 3rd-6th graders. Therefore, not all books are appropriate for all readers, but there are books that will be a perfect fit for your 3rd, 4th or 5th grader! Make sure it’s a “just right” book for your student to read independently, or, of course, teachers, parents (or Librarians!) can read any of the books aloud to their child as well.
At Forest North, students are encouraged to read Bluebonnet books during independent reading time, homework, and for fun. There are picture books, chapter books, and even graphic novels, all available for checkout at FNE. Our official Bluebonnet kickoff is mid-September, but students can start reading now!
In January, students who qualify to vote will be invited to the FNE social event of the year – the Bluebonnet Voting Party! To qualify to vote, students pass a simple online quiz – they need 6+ questions right (out of 8) to get credit for that book. Students are allowed to retest as many times as necessary.
In the past few years, we've had over 100 attendees in the library voting for their favorite, playing video games, enjoying snacks, and receiving a free book to take home and keep. Forest North has a very strong Bluebonnet participation culture!
Students who read 15 books or more are invited to a V.I.P. Bluebonnet Breakfast. This special event is well-attended each year for both the food and the glory!
Handfuls of students choose to read all twenty nominees each year in order to compete in the FNE Battle of the Bluebonnets. Last year, our Forest North team went on to win the RRISD Battle as well, against 23 other campuses! Mrs. Fournier hopes to retain the coveted Traveling Trophy this year!
Please encourage your student to participate in the Bluebonnet program to help them become better readers, more experienced in talking about books with friends, and to participate in these awesome opportunities in our library this fall!
