Superintendent's Update - 1.20.2023
Dear CPS Community,
This Monday will mark the 90th day of school, which means we have almost hit the halfway mark of the 2022/23 school year. It may have seemed like 180 days of school was an eternity at the beginning of the year when counting the days was in single digits, but time flies when you are having fun! The next 90 days of school will be just as fun as learning continues and the calendars fill with more events. Equally exciting at this time of year is that we are at the midway point of January, and we increase our daylight hours by two minutes each day!
There are a few updates this week that I would like to share. As a reminder, next Tuesday the 24th and Wednesday the 25th are Kindergarten Registration days at CPS. If you have not yet reserved an appointment for your incoming kindergartener, please do so. Also, please spread the word to your friends and neighbors that have kindergarten-age children for the 2023/24 school year. In other news, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is inviting students, parents, education professionals, and community members to participate in a survey that will provide feedback on the MCAS program and help inform improvements. The Department is seeking stakeholders’ input in several areas, including communications and support, data and reporting, and the release of test questions. The survey will close at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27. Please contact mcas@doe.mass.edu with any questions. Lastly, high school seniors who are considering attending college in the fall should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This infographic from the U.S. Department of Education may be helpful, and additional resources are available at www.mass.gov/financialaid.
The weather certainly made things a little tricky this morning; however, the weekend looks clear. We will have to see what the next few weeks have in store for us weatherwise. In the meantime, please enjoy this week’s newsletter highlights below and have a wonderful weekend.
Yours truly,
Jay Lang, Ed.D.

Billerica/Chelmsford girls hockey star Victoria Apostolakes has nose for net
Chelmsford High School senior Victoria (Tori) Apostolakes has played hockey pretty much her entire life. And each time, whether it was with the boys as a fifth-grader winning a league championship, or on the Billerica/Chelmsford co-op team as a 12-year-old seventh-grader going up against 18-year-olds, she has dealt with that adversity and thrived. Please continue reading about Tori at the Lowell Sun.
Chelmsford High Holds Hockey Fights Cancer Night
The Chelmsford High hockey community rallied around its two varsity teams for a great cause during its Hockey Fights Cancer Night on Jan. 5 at the Chelmsford Forum. The Lions girl's hockey team teamed up with the boy's squad for a memorable doubleheader, which included a pair of thrilling victories for both, but more importantly raised $1,128 to donate to the American Cancer Society.
