PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Suddenly everything is different! The weather! The decorations! The music!
Winter is obviously creeping up on us, and we at JMMS are in full sprint mode as we head into the final two and a half weeks of school in 2023!
December always brings with it a renewed energy. The cooler temperatures, and the festive spirit begins to raise a positive feeling in all corners of the campus.
As we look ahead to the final two weeks in 2023, our 7th graders are all set to head off on a field trip to Finance Park to help support AUSD’s Portrait of a Learner category of AUSD students being financially literate. These trips will take place on Thursday and Friday of this week. JMMS 8th graders will be attending Finance Park later on in January (6th graders will attend when they are in 7th grade).
As each second ticks away we draw closer to the return of theater to JMMS! Our Winter Performance is all set to take place on the evening of Thursday, December 14th.
Before you know it we will arrive at Winter Break. But we aren’t there just yet. So while we wait, enjoy this edition of the Dust Devil Weekly!
Sighted on Campus...
- Students in Mr. Winters' class learning about plate tectonics with graham crackers, frosting and fruit roll ups! What a fun way to learn about the earth! Hands on science and delicious to boot!
- Ms. Zarick's class learning how the kidneys filter out toxins from the blood! How cool!
JMMS Performing Arts Presents: North Pole's Got Talent!
We are excited to announce that the JMMS Performing Arts Program is back and will present it's Winter Production "North Pole's Got Talent" on Thursday, December 14th at 7pm in the JMMS Gym. The students have been rehearsing for months and cannot wait to perform for families and friends. Tickets are $5 at the door (suggested donation) and light refreshments will also be sold. Please come out and support this wonderful program, the students and the arts!
TAKE A CLOSER LOOK: Focus on Academic Dishonesty
The world is rapidly changing thanks to the advent of new and ever-changing technologies. New technologies often have the double effect of enhancing our life and work, but technology also causes challenges.
One of the newest technologies that we are all just now learning how to best utilize is AI. New apps like Chatgpt have opened up new possibilities for many. While we are still coming to understand all the capabilities, and uses for this new exciting technology, we have to be aware that this type of technology does make it easier for students to engage in academic dishonesty.
Academic dishonesty comes in many forms. Copying off of a partner’s paper, bringing a cheat sheet to an exam, and plagiarism have often been common forms of academic dishonesty. Most of us are familiar with those examples. The reason Academic dishonesty is so problematic is that when a pupil engages in these dishonest practices it becomes almost impossible to discern what a student can actually do and not do.
Students may be tempted to use AI to complete school work. For example, students can now simply type an essay topic into an AI application. Students can even ask the application to “dumb it down” to help evade detection. For example, a student can ask AI to generate an essay on the “Causes of the American Revolution in the style of an 8th grader.”
Students who use AI to complete their school are guilty of academic dishonesty. If caught, these students will be treated as though they cheated on an assignment. By using AI or similar apps, students prevent teachers from properly assessing the student’s proper level.
In time, AI might become a student and teacher’s best friend. But at this time, we want to ensure our students complete their work honestly, and to the best of THEIR abilities, not the abilities of some AI application.
