Inspire every child to discover, learn, achieve, and care
The professional development wing of Jefferson School is now complete so starting Monday, January 9, 2023 we will have a new drop off and pick up location for students enrolled in Mrs. Holtz and Mrs. Takagi’s classrooms. The staff from Mrs. Holtz and Mrs. Takagi's classes will meet the children outside, under the overhang at door #9, which is the entrance by the flagpole.
To minimize our parking challenges, parents of children in Mrs. Holtz and Mrs. Takagi's classrooms are encouraged to turn right at the flagpole instead of turning left on Greendale Ave. and park in the small parking lot. Parents of children in Ms. Rooney's, Ms. Demarinis', and Ms. Hallerduff's classrooms should park in an angled parking spot or along the curb on Greendale Ave. Parents should no longer double park behind the angle parked cars. If someone other than yourself drops off or picks up your child, please share our new procedures with them so they know where to park starting Monday, January 9th.
Thank you for your continued flexibility with our construction project and for helping to minimize congestion by parking in the aforementioned locations. We are excited that we will now have less congestion at drop off and pick up, which will be safer for students and families!
Recently we've had some "near misses" at drop off and pick up, where parents were walking between parked cars along the curb and another parent is backing up to leave their parking spot. If you walk between parked cars, remember to look to see if there is a driver in the car who may be getting ready to leave. Likewise, if you are getting ready to leave your parking spot, make certain to check for families walking across the street or on the sidewalk who may be walking behind your car.
School Closure Guidelines
As we head into the winter months, I'd like to share what our weather guidelines are for potentially closing school. These are the guidelines we would follow if we had to close school due to weather conditions.
In the event we need to close due to weather, students and staff will not attend school that day, and should we need to make up days during the school year, we will adjust the calendar accordingly. While it's never ideal to have to interrupt learning, I appreciate your understanding and cooperation when we are concerned about student and staff safety at school.
Change of Clothes
Teachers may take students outside for learning activities and physical exercise. And now with the changing temperatures, it is important that your child has a change of clothes at school. Please make certain that your child has an extra pair of underwear, socks, pants, shirt, and a long sleeve shirt or sweatshirt. Remember to write your child's name on the clothing tags so that it can be returned to its rightful owner!
Developmental Screenings
On a monthly basis the Early Childhood Diagnostic Team conducts screenings of children ages three to five. The screenings are conducted by a team, consisting of an occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, psychologist, and social worker. The areas assessed include motor, communication, play skills, pre-academic and thinking skills. The next Preschool Screening for the 2022-23 school year is scheduled for January 10th. To schedule an appointment for a screening call 847-318-4290.
COVID Dashboard
If you are interested in knowing how many active cases of COVID are present for Jefferson Early Childhood Center the dashboard can be found by clicking this link. An active case starts when a student tests positive and ends after a period of 10 days. Therefore, the numbers in the dashboard represent the reported students who are in that 10-day window. The dashboard will be updated daily.
If your child will be absent please call or email the Jefferson School nurse, Kelly DeFelice, at 847-318-5441 or kdefelice@d64.org.
Winter break starts tomorrow, Friday, December 22 and runs through Friday, January 6, 2023. Students and staff return to school on Monday, January 9th. Additionally, in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday there will be no school for students and staff on Monday, January 16th. Please make your calendars!
