TPSP Project
2nd grade students researched excercises and sports for their TPSP project, where they had to come up with a new game or health plan.
Poetry Stations
3rd grade students participated in figurative language stations, finding examples of 6 different types of figurative language in poetry.
Texas History Wax Museum
4th graders learned how to identify reliable sources while researching their Famous Texan for the Wax Museum.
Collaborative Partnerships
- All grade levels, K-5, worked on projects in collaboration with the librarian.
- 35 collaborative lessons took place in the library this school year.
Highlights from the 2016-2017 School Year
- Book Giveaway at the Back to School Bash, where 300 students received a gently used book.
- Added 6 ChromeBooks specifically for use in the library.
- Collaborated with the Art Teacher on DOT DAY activities for Kiner, 1st, and 2nd grades.
- Teaching 5th graders how to make citations.
- Armadillo Day was celebrated with the author, Mary Ann Casad, visiting 4th graders.
- Fall Book Fair fundraiser for new library books and MakerSpace activities.
- Author Visit with H.J. Ralles speaking to 4th graders about writing.
- Author Visit with Susan Stevens Crummel on Friday, Decemnber 2, 2016 with ALL grade levels.
- All students partipated in the Hour of Code the week of December 5, 2016
- Students that read 5 or more books from the Texas Bluebonnet List were invited to a voting party in the library during their lunch time. 30 students partipated this school year.
- Spring Book Fair fundraiser.
- Coin Drive -- students raised enough money that each classroom at Hillside received at least 3 books, lower grade levels receiving 5 or more.
- Dr. Seuss Week and Dr. Seuss Family Literacy Night
- Summer Reading Kick-off collaborating with Mrs. Gray the week of May 15th.
Non-Library Usage and Closures
- Vertical Team Meetings were held on Tuesday, September 27th, in the library. Library closed to students all day.
- Vertical Team Meetings were held on Tuesday, December 6th, in the library.
- Volunteer Breakfast held in library on Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
- Chess Assembly for 2nd and 3rd graders on Friday, March 24, 2017.
- LIGHT Brigade from Garland HS presented to 5th graders on April 26, 2017.
Goals for 2016-2017
- Provide a schedule that includes time for collaborative lessons, inquiry, and creativity
- Provide a Makerspace/Creator Club in the library.
- Obtain technology devices for student use in the library.
