Senior Sunrise Breakfast 🌅
It was a beautiful morning for this LPS Senior tradition.
Cross Country is CRUSHING IT with BIG WINS at every level!
These runners excel in athleticism, academics and the attitude it takes to be a leader. They represent what it means to succeed as an individual and use that strength to benefit the whole team. Their "Rising tide LIFTS all (Comet Community) boats!"
"Ella Knudsen was 1st overall and the team was 3rd, good enough for a trophy. The Men’s team was 4th overall and also ran strong. The Middle School was led by Chris Knudsen’s 1st place finish and the team came in 2nd, to also earn a trophy." -Coach Kirt
Check out their schedule at the link below!

Comets Dominate the Courts
The energy of all ages of girls' volleyball players electrify the halls. These Varsity LEADERS elevate what it means to be a Comet on the court and in the classroom. Check out when and where you can watch them conquering the courts on their page @leland_volleyball or at the link below.

6th & 7th grade goes to Camp Henry! With (long time Elementary but new to Middle School) teacher and outdoor aficionado Mr. Seguin! Thank you to all of the people who made this trip possible for our Comets!
HS Pottery!
Mrs. Suttmann's class took a walking trip around Leland. They visited the Historical jail and walked to Mrs. Suttmann's house to observe the chickens! The kids got to visit Silver, the chick the class hatched in the classroom last year.
"Living in the community and raising our kids to be able to walk around our town safely is an incredible thing that doesn't happen in most places. As we walk, we discuss safety at crosswalks, on sidewalks, and at driveways. There aren't many places we could do this and this is the precise reason we choose LPS! " - Mrs. Suttmann
Third and fourth grade students were able to take part in the Consensus Walk sponsored by the Old Art Building last Friday.
This art influenced journey allowed students to see how artists are inspired by each other and how community connections can be enjoyed as a group experience. We started at the OAB to view the purple infinity sculpture and then walked to various locations to see other pieces of art. This fieldtrip was a great way to launch our first IB unit where we will be exploring Balance and how systems work together. If you haven’t heard of the Conseses Walk please visit https://walks.consenses.org/walk/leland-mi/ Also, many thanks to local shop owners and staff who welcomed our students with kindness and a taste of Blue Unicorn ice cream.

The Leland Volleyball coaching staff and high school teams will provide coaching on Thursdays from 3:30-4:30pm in the Leland High School gym. The program will run September 28 - October 26. This year, the program will focus on more of a balance between modified game play and skill training. The program is free, and all athletes that participate in at least 4 sessions will receive a T-shirt and volleyball! Questions? Email Travis Baker at tbaker@lelandschool.com
The Leland Bridge Connection Mentor Program connects caring adult volunteers from the community with students in our schools. These volunteers serve as lunch buddies, academic coaches, or career advisors as well as another positive adult role model in your child’s life. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer mentor or want more information about this K-12 program at LPS please contact Mary Fleishman at mary.fleishman@gmail.com or Matt Peschel at mpeschel@lelandschool.com.
PARENT TEACHER ORGANIZATION HOSTS BACK TO SCHOOL MEETING
On Monday, Leland’s Parent Teacher Organization hosted its monthly all-member meeting (pictured above), where bylaws for this new organization were adopted and each of the group’s Committee Chairs reviewed the scope of their work and current initiatives to support teachers, engage parents, and enhance our school community. The room was full of great ideas and discussion–from new and familiar faces alike. Meeting minutes and other important materials from this organization can always be found here. The PTO’s next meeting will be held on Monday October 2nd at 6pm in the high school library. Please join us! And while you are saving dates, be sure to also mark Thursday October 5th. Thanks to the support of some generous local businesses, the Leland PTO is hosting a free Fall Social for teachers, parents, guardians, and grandparents on October 5th from 6 to 8 pm at Tandem Ciders. This group knows that schedules are hectic, so no need to formally RSVP. Just join the fun if you are able! Photo credit: Stacey Brugeman

When should a child stay home from school?
Our goal is to keep kids in school as much as possible. However, children may be excluded if the illness prevents the child from participating comfortably in school activities or if there is the risk of spreading harmful disease to others.
Criteria include:
· Severely ill: A child that is lethargic (extremely tired) or less responsive, has difficulty breathing, or has a rapidly spreading rash.
· Fever: A child with a temperature of 100.4°F or greater AND behavior changes or other signs or symptoms (e.g., sore throat, rash, vomiting, or diarrhea). The child should not return until 24 hours of no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications.
· Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools. The child should have no loose stools for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Exception: A healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. Diarrhea may be caused by antibiotics or new foods a child has eaten. Please contact your healthcare provider for further guidance. For students with diarrhea caused by Campylobacter, E. coli, Salmonella or Shigella, reach out to the school nurse for disease specific exclusion periods.
· Vomiting: A child that has vomited two or more times unless a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. The child should have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours prior to returning.
· Abdominal pain: A child with abdominal pain that continues for more than two hours, or intermittent pain associated with fever or other symptoms.
· Rash: The child with a rash AND has a fever or a change in behavior. Exclude until the rash subsides or until a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. For students with a diagnosed rash, please consult with the school nurse for exclusion dates and required clearance criteria. Note: Rapidly spreading bruising or small blood spots under the skin need immediate medical attention.
· Sores: A child with weeping sores on an exposed area that cannot be covered with waterproof dressing.
· Certain communicable diseases: Children and staff diagnosed with certain communicable diseases, including COVID-19, may have to be excluded for a certain period. Please consult with the school nurse for disease specific exclusion dates.
