STAAR 2.0 & Writing
Redesigned 2.0.
STAAR 2.0: New Item Types
Beginning in the spring of 2023 the STAAR test will now include approximately 75% multiple choice items and at least 25% new item types. These new item types for 3rd-5th grade RLA are:
- Hot text
- Multipart
- Multiselect
- Inline Choice
- Short Constructed Response
- Extended Constructed Response
Short Constructed Response (SCR)
The Short Constructed Response (SCR) and Extended Constructed Response (ECR) require
students to provide a written response. The SCR will be based on an open ended question where
students are expected to give a brief explanation that demonstrates understanding of content.
This type of question can be linked to a reading or writing passage. In a reading passage, the
students would need to answer a question in their own words and provide text evidence that
supports their thinking. In a writing passage the student could be asked to revise or edit a
sentence to improve its meaning or clarity.
Extended Constructed Response (ECR)
The ECR will consist of a writing prompt based on a reading passage. According the latest information released in October 2022, the prompt can be informational or argumentative. This means that 3rd-5th grade students will be writing an essay in response to a reading passage. Check out this Scoring Guide from TEA. The instructional implications of the new STAAR Redesigned 2.0 mean that the Reading and Writing Workshop need to be connected. We can no longer teach reading and writing in silos.
