The Cornell Quaranzine
Supporting Your Well-being - Spring 2021
3/8/2021
Dear Community,
This is a week that many of you have surely been looking forward to -- the reason being Wellness Days! Because this semester does not have a longer Spring Break, it is important that we still make sure to practice self-care as well as prioritize the opportunities that we have to take a step away from our busy schedules. In this edition of the Quaranzine, we will share a number of resources and events that you can use to dedicate to your own rest and enrichment.
Wishing you wellness,
The Skorton Center for Health Initiatives

But First: A Self Check-in
Last year, a Cornell professor published a research article about the powerful
impact of a compliment, and the dynamics around giving one. They found that the
compliment-givers underestimate the positive impact of a compliment and
overestimate a stranger’s discomfort if approaching them to say something nice (“that jacket is
amazing” or “I really like your mask!”).
I'm sure you have heard it said before - a lot of the time, it is the small things that make a
big difference. Much like a few Wellness Days over the course of a semester can have a
surprisingly rejuvenating effect if we use them well, a simple compliment can have a big
impact on somebody's day. Perhaps now is a good time to consider the following:
- What is the best compliment you’ve ever received?
- What’s the best compliment you have ever given?
- Is there anything keeping you from complimenting others?

- Manage your time by using a semester calendar and a weekly planner. These calendars are available from the Learning Strategies Center: http://lsc.cornell.edu/semester-calendar/
- Stop procrastinating by exploring why you procrastinate so that you don’t fall behind. While many lectures are recorded and classes are asynchronous, you can still create your own 9am – 5pm schedule to keep yourself on track. Register for the March 12 Procrastination workshop offered by CAPS at Cornell Health.
- Learn from mistakes and see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Develop your growth mindset by recognizing & reframing negative self-talk and remembering "I made a mistake, but I am not a mistake".
- Get help when you need it! Connect with peers, TAs, and instructors when you're stuck (in COVID safe ways of course).
