Washington County Teacher of the Year
Congratulations to Mrs. Fugate on being named the Washington County Teacher of the Year! Mrs. Fugate will now advance to compete for the Region 7 Teacher of the Year. We wish you the best of luck!
First Grade Goals for 2024
First grade students have new goals set for the new year! Students decided on their goal for 2024 by brainstorming ideas for things they would like to do this year. We had discussions about some of the great things we did and learned in 2023. It is amazing how students can remember the smallest details that made an impact on their learning. After choosing the goal they wanted to write about, they finished decorating the picture and we shared them for all to see in the hallway. Several of the students incorporated the theme into their goal, which is to "be a light." Lots of students strive to be a light to earn recognition for being kind by receiving coins as a reward for their good deeds. Greendale lions are set to have a wonderful year!
4-H and Cloverbud
Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in the 4-H program and its junior counterpart, Cloverbud. Greendale welcomes Mrs. Peek (4-H) and Mrs. Bailey (Cloverbud) monthly to meet with our students and provide programming through Virginia Cooperative Extension.
The 4-H Cloverbud program is developmentally age-appropriate for youth age 5 and in kindergarten to age 8 and in the third grade. Children are involved in noncompetitive group activities, rather than individual projects. In doing so, the children learn life skills, which include getting along with others and feeling good about themselves. Typically, 4-H Cloverbud children explore these subject areas: healthy lifestyle, environmental and earth science, citizenship and civic education, plants and animals, consumerism and family science, science and technology, personal development, and community and expressive arts.
4-H is a youth development program designed for children and youth ages 9 and in 4th grade up to 18 and in twelfth grade. The 4-Hs are Head, Heart, Hands, and Health. 4-H emphasizes the practical application of knowledge or "learning by doing" to develop skills and acquire a sense of responsibility, initiative, and self-worth. Throughout the year students may participate in several projects including dramatic reading, presentations, share-the-fun, and several other individual projects.
Important Americans
Second grade is learning about ten important Americans. So far, we’ve learned a lot about life for African Americans, specifically after Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery. Students have learned the hardships faced by Martin Luther King Jr. as well as George Washington Carver. Second grade teachers have been proud to see students’ recognition of the importance of equality. We’ve been excited to witness their interest and enthusiasm towards the subject of civil rights, and we look forward to watching it grow as we study the lives of Rosa Parks and Jackie Robinson.
Book Blast
Book Blast kicked off on January 29. Students need to complete their treasure map for a chance to win a treasure box or iPad. All students will receive free books from this project.
One School One Book
Remembering Mr. Bill
Students in guidance and library classes have been sharing stories and honoring the memory of Mr. Bill by making memory lights in his honor. Once all memory lights have been completed, they will be displayed in one of the hallways at Greendale Elementary. Fly high, Mr. Bill. You are always in our hearts.
