Vacation Homework Requests
Dear Parents:
Due to our efforts to implement an integrated curriculum, it is very difficult to give you work in advance when students are on vacation during the school year and work that is directly related to our classroom units or projects. Most of our learning takes place in an integrated way; that is, many subjects are woven together as we learn about a topic or theme, and our focus is on collaboration and communication among students to improve learning. Many times, our planning is done just a day or two in advance because we use what the children are learning and accomplishing to plan our next steps. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to replace the instruction from a teacher or the work with groups when students are absent.
We do believe that traveling can provide valuable learning experiences for students. The kinds of activities you can do while you are away to support your child’s learning are ones that focus on practicing and using academic skills in a real and meaningful way. For example:
· Use maps to chart your travels
· Keep a journal, write postcards, take notes, and do other “real life” writing
· Coordinate a pictorial and written journal for your child to share with the class upon their return. We love learning about new places and experiences!
· Use math as it relates to your trip: estimate daily distances and costs (fuel, food, lodging, entertainment, admissions, etc.), calculate total altitude change, and calculate time changes.
· Before leaving on your trip, research the history, geography, or interesting sites in the area where you are going.
· Read daily!
I’m sure you can think of many ways to keep your child practicing what they know and making the most of the many learning opportunities as they arise.

WHEN TO STAY HOME
As we approach a time of year when illness is on the increase, we would like to review our illness guidelines for when to keep your child home. These are only a few of our most common symptoms we see. If you have any questions about a specific symptom your student is having, please feel free to call our office.

Volunteers
CURRENT VOLUNTEER BADGES ARE REQUIRED FOR ANY AND ALL FIELD TRIPS!!
Dear Crater families,
Over the summer there have been big changes to the Box Tops program. You may have noticed new packaging on super market shelves and that is because Box Tops have gone digital! Please continue to clip and send in any traditional box tops as they will still be honored until their expiration date. But, all new packaging will no longer contain the traditional clip and will instead have an image reminding you to scan your receipt. Please download the all new Box Tops app and scan receipts for qualifying purchases so that our school can continue to earn
Great job sending in your box tops so far! Our leader board is as follows:
1st place - Mrs. Thorsell's class
2nd place - Mrs. Soumokil's class
3rd place - Mrs. Rierson's class
So great job to these classes! Remember to keep sending in box tops clips and scanning receipts in the app for newer packaging. It's still anybody's game and the top 3 classes will be announced again at the start of December. The class with the most Box Tops at the final count in May gets an ice cream party!
Thank you for your participation and happy clipping!
A Note From The Resource Room
If you would like to donate, a blue drop bin is located outside the Crater Office. Arrangements can also be made with Emily Scharfenberger at acresourceroom@newberg.k12.or.us, or through their Facebook or Instagram accounts.
We have seen Costco, Kohls, and Fred Meyers have great prices on fleece blankets, as well as amazing deals on board games. Top pics are Monopoly Jr., Apples to Apple Jr., Connect 4, Life, Guess Who, and Cranium - but any board game suited for elementary aged students is welcome!
If your workplace, church, or extended family is interested in adopting the Crater Resource Room, we have some great options and wish lists we'd love to share too! Thanks for showing our students that Crater cares!
