Congratulations to Years 5 and 6 for a very successful Mini Fete held last Thursday. All students appeared to have a wonderful time and took part in a range of different activities. The students who ran the stalls did a fantastic job and also had a great time. Money raised will go toward the Year 6 farewell and graduation present to the school. Please see below for some photos from the day.
Congratulations to Taylise in Year 5 for her performance at the Schools Spectacular over the weekend. Taylise is a part of the NSW Public Schools Junior Dance Ensemble and performed with them on the night. I was lucky enough to attend on Friday night and saw some wonderful performances by some very talented students from NSW public schools. The Schools Spectacular will air on Channel 7 over the coming weeks. Look out for Taylise who will perform in the "Annie" section of the show.
Tomorrow we will be holding our Banksia Scrub Environmental Education Day, where our community will learn about the significance of the Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub that we have growing within our school grounds. We will have visitors from Ecohort Bush Regeneration, Featherdale Wildlife Park and the Botany Bay Education Centre to run some hands on activities for the students to participate in. Please join us at 9:30am for a whole school assembly if you would like to learn more about the species.
Ms N Hoskins

Changes to Staff in 2017
At the end of the year we will be saying farewell to some of our valued members of staff.
Mrs Annie Whittaker, relieving Assistant Principal and teacher of 1W, has secured a permanent position as an Assistant Principal at Croydon Public School. Congratulations to Mrs Whittaker on this achievement. Mrs Whittaker has led the Stage One team very successfully this year. She will be a significant loss to Banksmeadow PS but will be a wonderful asset to Croydon PS over the coming years.
Mr Matthew Johnstone, teacher of Year 3, will also be leaving Banksmeadow at the end of the year. Mr Johnstone has been with us since Term 2 and has been a wonderful addition to our staff. He will be heading overseas to England to teach. We wish Mr Johnstone luck on this adventure and hope to see him back in Australia one day soon.
We welcome back Mrs Sharon Steinman, teacher in the Preschool, after a significant time overseas.
End of Year Activities - REPEAT
As the days are quickly flying by, we have begun to plan our end of year events. There will be many things happening at school, particularly in the last couple of weeks of term. Please include the following dates in your diary so that you don't miss out on any of them:
* Year 7 Orientation Day - Tuesday 6th December: Year 6 students attending public schools in 2017 should have received some information regarding this day from their enrolled high school
* Year 6 Day Out & Farewell - Wednesday 7th December: Year 6 will head to 'Attractivitiy' for some fun activities before returning to school later in the day for some more events. Please refer to previous notes sent home by Mr Murphy
* Presentation Day and Volunteer Morning Tea - The Presentation Day assembly will start at 9.15am in the hall on Friday 9th December. The school has sent a letter in the mail to parents whose children will be receiving an award on the day. The Hippopotamus Choir will be performing during the assembly and the Year 6 Graduation Ceremony will follow at the end. After the Presentation Day assembly, the school will be holding a thank you morning tea in the library for all our helpers and volunteers. Please come along if you have assisted the school in any way this year. This includes programs and events such as reading helpers, school banking , preparation for dance performances, Mother's Day and Father's Day stalls, Spartan event , assisting at sport, etc.
* End of Year Concert - Our annual School concert will be held on Tuesday 13th December and will be split into two time slots to allow more room for the audience to be seated in the school hall. There will be a Kindergarten - Year 2 Concert at Midday. All classes in K-2 will be performing, as well as our Support Unit, and Junior and Senior dance groups. There will be a recess break between 1 and 1.20pm so that all these students and their parents who do not have older children may leave the hall area. The next concert will begin at around 1.20pm. All students in Years 3-6, as well as the Guitar groups (Junior, including the Year 2 guitar students, and Senior) and both dance groups will perform in the second concert. At the end of the concert the P&C will be drawing their Christmas raffle winners.
* End of Year Activity Day - Thursday 15th December: all students will participate in a range of fun activities. A note with further information about each activity will be sent home soon.
* Talent Quest and Last day of 2016 - Some students will perform an item for the school to showcase their talents. This will also be the last day of school for all students in 2016.
Donations request for Christmas Raffle - REPEAT
The P&C will be holding their annual raffle again this year. They are asking for donations for the raffle prizes. Please drop all donations into the office as soon as possible. Students will receive a booklet of raffle tickets today to sell to their family and friends . Raffles will be drawn at the End Of Year Concert on Tuesday 13th December.
World Festival of Magic - Free Tickets - REPEAT
The Lions Club of Bondi has kindly given our school some tickets for the World Festival of Magic to be held at the Hordern Pavilion, Moore Park on Monday 19th December (11am, 1:30pm or 4pm). The tickets are for entry to a 90 minute show that is guaranteed to amuse and astound the whole family. If you would like tickets for your family, please see the school office. Please note that tickets will be given to the first families who request them. Tickets will be limited to immediate family members only.
Student Banking Volunteers - REPEAT
Many of our students use the Commonwealth Bank's School Banking to bank each week. This program is supported by parent/grandparent volunteers who come to the school on a Thursday every couple of weeks to count and then bank the money. Unfortunately, we only have three volunteers at the moment. If you are available to help out, even for just one Thursday a term, please contact Sarah on bpspandc@hotmail.com, or see Ms Hoskins.
Environmental Education Day - Banksia Scrub - REPEAT
Along the Brighton St and Stephen Rd corner of the school, we have an area of land that is home to the protected Eastern Suburbs Banksia Scrub. Today, less than 3% of the original distribution of this community remains in a number of isolated remnants. Each month we have a company who specialises in bush regeneration, who visit the site to perform maintenance and remediation works.
This area of land is a special one, and we would like to educate our students and our community about why it is so special, and what we can do to continue to protect it.
We will be holding an environmental education day on Tuesday 29th October. On this day, there will be activities for all students to participate in, including taking part in some bush regeneration work, as well as learning about the history of the Banksia Scrub and the land. We will also have some visitors from the Botany Bay Education Centre and Featherdale Wildlife Park. Parents and members of our community are also invited to attend and participate in the day. Please pass the below invitation on to anyone in the community whom you feel may like to attend.
2017 Enrolments - REPEAT
We are beginning to plan for 2017 classes. If your child will not be returning to Banksmeadow next year, or if you are aware of any families who will be moving into the area and hoping to enrol, could you please let Ms Hoskins know as soon as possible so as to assist with planning.
