Food For Thought... Helping with Memory Recall
Students with learning disabilities such as dyslexia (experts say impact from 1 in 5 to 1 in 10 learners) this happens more frequently and especially with reading, multiplication facts, and history dates. Think of the path from seeing a letter, to matching it with the sound, putting it back out paired with other letters/sounds into speech. Reading is a pathway in the brain. Most students have clear, well-defined pathways. Dyslexics (your slower readers in the class) do not have an efficient route - I like to explain it as taking a different path through a field to get to the other side, a differnt path every time! Most students wear an effiicent well used path back and forth. Struggling reader brains have to become more efficient and wear that path out to make it the one used most often.
This relates to more than just reading. What about the process to follow to add fractions? Biology and Civics facts? Our students need memory help!! Those of you that attended Mr. Ahern & Ms. Webster's professional sharing session saw how they involve visuals and mnemonic devices to help recall.
Tips:
- Sort information - group old with new - relate it to something they already know
- Add a visual - these 21st century learners have visual brains - pictures, cartoons characters, stick figures, or let them draw it
- Frequent review - take a five minutes each day to review the "new" info of the week. Don't assume they remember, keep reviewing it to help them burn that pathway in their brain
- Humor or exaggeration: students will remember the story and facts rather than just struggle to remember the facts
- Two or more senses - have them close their eyes and visualize as you talk through the story or process or have shown them a visual
- Color code - highlighters, color post it notes, flags. Make it pop!
- Verbal reciting- chant it out, you say it, they say it, call/response
- Musical or physical - add sounds and arm movements!
Thank you for taking time to ensure students have learned it, not just that a teacher has taught it!
