The Wenatchee School Board will now provide a "Board Meeting Summary Briefing" after each Board meeting. The summary includes a short description of the main topics and action items. These summaries are not meant to replace minutes. The minutes for each meeting are approved and posted after the next regularly scheduled meeting. We hope these summaries provide some basic information and context around the reports, presentations and action items.

TIM LARSON STATEMENT Watch
Mr. Larson read a prepared statement announcing that he would not be taking the oath of office. Larson was elected to position # 2 during the November election.

The honorable Judge Kristin Ferrera presided over the oath of office for Ms. Jaecks and Mr. Barron.

REORGANIZATION OF THE BOARD Watch
Prior to the election of new board officers, Mr. Barron asked to have a discussion on the Board’s policy relating to officer positions in order to establish a common understanding of these roles prior to electing officers.


A roll call vote was taken and Ms. Jaecks was elected as president and Mr. Barron as vice president.

CITIZENS' COMMENTS Watch

Erin King Luce
Encouraged the board to consider a person of color or parent of a special needs child for the vacant board positions.

Christina Medina
Supported Erin King Luce and would like to encourage parents of special needs to apply for a vacant board position. She indicated that she would also like to see new board members with teaching experience, fluency in other languages, and experiences with childhood trauma.

Alma Chaon
Thanked the board for their work. She felt that there needed to be a stronger procedure in place to address board vacancies when there is an election issue.

SPECIAL PRESENTATIONS Watch
Larry Mayfield, Executive Director of Business & Finance

2018-19 Year-End Financial Report
Mr. Mayfield provided a summary report of the District’s 2018-2019 year-end finances. The report showed $1.2 million restored to the District’s fund balance, however, only $525,000 of those funds were not designated for specific programs.


BOARD COMMUNICATION Watch
Dr. Sandberg, Ms. Jaecks, Mr. Barron and members of the cabinet attended the WASSDA conference in Bellevue. Dr. Sandberg attended conference sessions on equity and would like the board to continue having conversations on this topic. There is a great deal of poverty and diversity in our district and she would like to look at policies that will impact outcomes for students.

Mr. Barron appreciated being able to meet with other superintendents and board members around the state at the conference.


SUPERINTENDENT REPORT Watch

Board Vacancy Timeline
Superintendent Gordon presented the options for deadlines. One before winter break and one after winter break. The Board chose to extend the application period through January 6th to allow for the promotion of the vacancy over the holidays.

The Board agreed to the following timeline.
Applications Period: Monday, January 6 at 4:00 p.m.
Application Review: Monday, January 6 at 5:00 p.m
Interviews: Thursday, January 9 beginning at 5:00 p.m. during an open public meeting.
Announcement: Friday, January 10 all candidates will be notified of the final selection and a community-wide announcement will be made.
