Just like that, we’re already into October! I hope you and your family have some special fall traditions that you can enjoy together this month!

Around the building, October holds some exciting events and activities ahead! From spirit week and a fall pep rally to the Pumpkin Drop and Costume Day - we’re excited for the weeks ahead!

We are also eager to connect with students’ families at Parent-Teacher Conferences. Please continue to watch for details on conferences.

Lastly, please remember the quarter wraps up on Thursday, October 20th. Please be sure to stay connected with students’ grades and progress on Canvas.

JAJHS Families,

As we start to put a wrap on our fall season, I would like to take a moment and thank all of our student-athlete parents. You have represented Jonathan Alder in a positive way in the stands and I have received many compliments from our conference ADs how respectful all of you are. Thank you to our volunteers for helping run chains, scoreboards, line judging and concessions. We would not be able to offer concessions or run our sporting events without you. Again, thank you for helping our fall sports athletes have a positive experience!

We will be starting to transition to winter sports at the end of October. Please make sure your student athletes have an up to date physical and are keeping up on their grades if they are interested in basketball, wrestling or cheerleading. We will be running eligibility checks for winter sports at the end of the quarter. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns!

We expect purchased school pictures to be delivered during the week of October 17th.

For those who were absent on the first picture day or for those who purchased a package and are not happy with their picture, we have scheduled retakes for Thursday, October 27, 2022. If anyone needs a retake they MUST return their entire UNCUT picture package.

Orders can no longer be placed from the initial picture date - until the picture packages come in. If you didn’t order you will still receive an envelope with a proof of your student's picture. There is a direct ordering link and you will be provided with a password to view your student's picture and place an order.

It's back! We are excited for the 2nd annual homeroom pumpkin decorating and pumpkin drop with our local AEP workers on October 28th!

We could use your help with pumpkin donations! Please click here to review the available slots and click on the button to sign up. We are looking for medium to large-sized pumpkins. You can bring them to the office anytime before October 17th. Thank you so much!

We will be having a Veterans Day assembly on Friday, November 11th. One way we would like to honor veterans is by having a slideshow featuring family members of our students who are veterans. Please send pictures to Mrs. Lawson at lawsonhe@japioneers.org and include the following:

We are excited for our JAJHS Spirit Week the week of October 17th! We will end the week with our Fall Pep Rally to celebrate our fall teams and programs!

Monday, 10/17: PJ Day - Relax and wear your comfy clothes to kick off the week!

Tuesday, 10/18: Dress for a Future Career - Athlete? Doctor? Construction? Choose an outfit to celebrate a favorite career! (Yes, you can bring a hat to match your career!)

Wednesday, 10/19: Look Alike Day - Dress like a friend, group of friends, favorite teacher, or famous figure

Thursday, 10/20: Alder Spirit Day - Wear your Alder gear or red and black to celebrate Pioneer Pride!

Parents and Guardians,

The Junior High will be holding in-person conferences on Tuesday, November 1st and Thursday, November 3rd. There will be a combination of teacher requested and parent requested conferences. If your child's teachers are interested in meeting as a team to discuss your child's progress, you will receive an email asking you to sign up for a time that works best for you on one of these days. If you do not receive a request to set up a team meeting, you are still able to schedule a meeting with your student’s teacher(s). These scheduled conferences will be ten minutes long and with individual teachers. This means that if you would like to meet with each of your student’s teachers, you must schedule multiple individual conferences. Please look for more information about this the week of October 10th.

We are excited to continue the longstanding JAJHS tradition of enjoying Halloween costumes on Friday, October 28th. Please remind your student to help us keep this tradition positive with the following reminders:

• Costumes should be tasteful and appropriate for school.

• Absolutely no weapons or lookalike objects will be allowed.

• Costumes should not include full face masks - we want to see the smiles!

Student council representatives will be released on Tuesday, October 11th. Thank you to everyone who applied! Our first meeting is Wednesday, October 12 during lunch for 7th grade and Thursday, October 13 during intervention for 8th grade. All student council meetings will be held in Mrs. Garner's room.

We are excited for Girls’ Tech Day! This event has been virtual for the last few years, and will be in person on Friday, October 21 from 9am-1:30pm at COSI.

AWS Girls’ Tech Day aims to inspire and motivate girls and young women to develop and pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

Middle and junior high girls, grades 5-8, will enjoy an engaging opening session with a dynamic panel of STEAM professionals, followed by interactive workshops to explore the industry further.

This event is FREE to all participants.

Students will need to be signed in at COSI on the day of the event and will be fully supervised by AWS staff and volunteers. Lunch will be provided for all participants.

To stay connected to your child's classrooms, we encourage you to visit our Canvas pages. Instructions for creating accounts, downloading apps, and pairing your account to your child's can be found on the Digital Learning Tools website. Students' grades as well as many lessons and activities will be shared through Canvas. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It has come to the attention of the Food Service Department that many families are not aware of their eligibility status regarding their Free and Reduced Price Meal Application. This is most likely due to emails going to the SPAM folder. The software we use as our Point of Sale and notification system is Solana. Emails regarding your child's account balance and your family eligibility will come from Solanaadmin@horizonsolana.com Please add this email to your contacts to receive any emails in the future.

Grace for students that were approved for free or reduced meals last year will end on September 27th. Applications must be filled our prior to this date to avoid incurring meal charges.

For fees to be waived, an approved free application must be on file with a signed waiver form. This is Section 5 in Final Forms. If you received an email at the beginning of the year instructing you to not fill out an application because your child has been determined to be free by Rebecca Rings, you still must complete a waiver form or click yes on the Final Forms application, yes on Section 5 and sign the form. Meal Costs for the 2022-2023 School Year:

Breakfast: $1.50

Reduced Price Breakfast: $0.00

Preschool-6th Grade: $3.00

7th Grade-12th Grade $3.25

Reduced Priced Lunch Pk-12: $0.40

Adult Lunch: $4.25

The state of Ohio requires vaccines for students entering the 7th grade. These requirements include:

1. Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)

2. Meningococcal-ACY (Meningitis)

If your child has not received these vaccines, please make arrangements to obtain these immunizations as soon as possible. You may schedule these vaccines with your child's doctor, the health department or a walk-in clinic. If your child has received these vaccines, please make sure to forward a copy of the record to the school fax (614-873-0845, drop off in the school office or email them to cazareje@japioneers.org

Medications at School

Sometimes parents ask that school personnel administer medication to their child during the school day. When this is necessary, we require written permission and instructions from the parent and in some instances from the doctor.

The required form “Distribution/Student Use of Medicines/Medications” must be completed and turned in to the junior high office with the medication to be administered.

School Fees

The school fees for 7th and 8th grade can be paid online using MyPaymentsPlus or you can bring cash or check to the school office. The fees are $30 per student for the 2022-2023 school year.
