Letter from Superintendent Bowles to NSCSD Families
Dear NSCSD Parents and Families,
As many of you know, two neighboring school districts have experienced the senseless losses of students to separate tragic incidents within the past week. According to the National Association of School Psychologists, high profile acts of violence can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry that their friends or loved-ones are at risk.
We all should expect and try to understand that there will be a variety of emotions and
responses to what has occurred. The most important thing we can do is to be supportive and
encourage an open expression of feelings. We understand that this may be a difficult topic for you to discuss with your child. Here is a resource from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) that may help you talk to your child about violence: Talking to Children About Violence: Tips for Parents and Teachers.
If you feel your child would benefit from further support in school, please reach out to your student’s school support staff. Contact information for support staff in each building along with community resources can be found on the NSCSD Wellness website at https://sites.google.com/nscsd.org/wellness-resources/home.
Today, we need the bonds of our great NSCSD community which allow us to lean on one another so that we can support the children in front of us. Please remind your children that we are a community that takes care of one another, so if they or someone else is struggling they should speak up.
Please remember to take care and show yourself the same grace that you so generously show others, and do not hesitate to reach out if we can be of assistance to you or your family.
Sincerely,
Daniel D. Bowles
