Creating and Using Modules
What is the benefit of using modules?
Use Modules to:
- Create prerequisite activities that students must complete before moving on in the course
- Track student progress through a sequence of learning activities
- Organize course content by unit, day, week, topic, or outcome
How should I structure a module?
Modules are used to organize course content by weeks, units, or a different organizational structure. Modules essentially create a one-directional linear flow of what students should do in a course.
Tip: Minimize the size of modules for easier organization and copying to other sections and/or courses.
Additional information about Modules can be found in the Instructional Guide section of the Tips & Tricks Course. Enroll through the following link: Canvas FAQ, integrations, and Tips & Tricks.

Making Modules Accessible and Usable
To make your content more accessible and user-friendly for students, staff, or parents/guardians who may need to access your course:
- Use Text Headers to organize or chunk module items. This provides an outline of the content within the module.
- When adding any URL, reference where the link will take a user. Do not paste the raw URL as a link.
- Example: Visit the HCPS Technology Supports Website for more information.
- Non-Example: Visit https://hcps.org/students/TechnologySupports.aspx for more information.
- Use specific and consistent naming conventions across modules.
- Create content within Canvas to enhance accessibility and create a more seamless experience across devices.
- Run the Canvas Accessibility checker prior to saving the module.
