Principal Message
Hello Cooper Family and Friends,
Welcome to March! This month brings us our Reading Challenge, Learning Fair Presentations, Dance Party, Day Light Saving Time with longer evenings, and Spring Break! This all leads up to fun times at Cooper Elementary!
We kick off this month celebrating Read Across America and our Reading Challenge sponsored by our Student Leadership team. To "kicked" this challenge off, students and staff can dress up on Monday, February 27 as their favorite book character. Also on Monday, each student will choose a stuffed animal "reading buddy to read to during this challenge -thank you to our Student Leadership fundraising! This reading challenge runs from February 27-March 17. Then there are LOTS OF AWARDS when we return from spring break!
Breakout your NEON GLOW apparel for our 2nd Annual Special Persons Dance Saturday, March 4th sponsored by our PTO! A night full of family fun, dancing, games and refreshments! Dancing starts at 5:00pm and runs until 7:00pm. See you there!
We have over 50 entries for the Learning Fair which is open to all students. This is an opportunity for students to share with others about any topic that interests them. Learning Fair projects will be shared and open to all families to view on Tuesday, March 14th in the Cooper Gym between 4:00-5:30. Come see!
In the middle of this month, we will take time off of school for Spring Break March 20-24 returning to school on Monday, March 27.
Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will be taking the Wisconsin State Forward Exam this April. All 3rd and 5th graders are tested in Language Art and Mathematics while 4th graders are tested in all content areas. More information will be shared with our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade families later this month.
Students continue to challenge themselves with their goals. I continue to urge you and your child to set aside at least 20 minutes per day for reading. This can be a read-a-loud together, independent reading, paired reading or a variety of all. The more children read, the more vocabulary words they hear, and the more vocabulary words they hear, the larger their working vocabulary will be. It is estimated that a child who reads or is read to for at least 20 minutes per day will have read/heard about 2,000,000 words by the end of the school year!
Life can get very hectic, but helping your child form a daily reading habit can make a huge difference in academic success.
Thank you again,
Mrs. Jackey Syens
