Mary Woodward PSO
April 28, 2023
A Note from your PSO
With just a few short weeks left before summer break, the momentum is still going strong for our Mary Woodward Eagles and their families! We had another amazing turnout to our Scholastic book fair, putting new books into students hands and fostering the love of reading for so many. The auction was a huge success and fun was had by all! A HUGE thank you to the Auction Committee who put countless hours into making the event run so smoothly and raising so much money for our school. The committee’s generosity of talents, time and resources were evident throughout the evening. With many events behind us, we continue to look forward to our family dance next month as well as our school wide carnival in June.
While things are winding down for this school year, the PSO is already starting to prep for the 2023/2024 school year! During our April PSO meeting, we elected a new PSO board. I must say, we have another awesome group of volunteers! If you are interested in being a part of the PSO, or maybe you just like having the inside scoop, join us for our last PSO meeting of the year (May 4th @ 8:30 AM in the cafeteria). Everyone is welcome!
I would like to introduce our 2023/2024 PSO Board:
President: Susan Purfield
President-Elect: Kelsey Paldino
Secretary: Stacey Beckman
Treasurer: Kristin Romelhardt
Assistant Treasurer: Danielle Smart
Volunteer Coordinator: Bill Brown
Thank you for everything that you do to help our students and staff be successful! We appreciate each of you!

Walk and Roll
May 3rd is Walk and Roll to School Day!
Meet fellow students at the Walnut Street Fire Station or Summerlake Dog Park at 7:30a to walk, bike or scooter to school together!
Family Dance
To accommodate the whole school attending, it is suggested that families attend according to the schedule below. Families with students in both ranges may choose which dance to attend or come from 6-8p to attend both sessions.
Kindergarten - 2nd grade families attend 5-6:45p
3rd grade - 5th grade families attend 7-8:45p
A pre-order form is attached below and will be coming home with students next week. These can be used to order tickets, boutonnieres, corsages and photos by May 12. Tickets and photos can be purchased at the door, but flowers are only available by pre-order. Guests are encouraged to bring cash to buy glow items priced $0.50-$4.
We need a lot of volunteers for this event. Shifts are only 30 minutes so you can spend most of your time with your family. Older siblings are welcome to sign up to volunteer too! Any adult volunteer must have an approved background check on file with TTSD. Please volunteer for at least one shift. Sign up here or click the link below!
Stock the Staff Room
This year, we've been asking families to help keep our school staff room stocked with healthy snacks and delicious treats and it has been a great success! Staff are often stopping by to grab a quick snack to fuel them just a bit longer.
In May, we are asking kindergarten families to bring in donations to help restock the staff room. Please drop off your donations in the wagon just inside the main doors any time during the month. Popular items include trail mix, granola bars, fresh fruit, yogurt, string cheese, k-cups, seltzer water and diet and regular soda.
Thank you to all the other grades who donated earlier this year. It made a huge impact on morale, especially on those more challenging days.
Your Staff Room Donations Are Appreciated!
Dine Out Fundraisers
April had 2 wonderful fundraisers--Burgerville and Casa Lola. Both were very popular. Thank you for dining out and supporting our school!
May is full of dine-out opportunities!
- May 1-28: Krispy Kreme (online and nationwide fundraiser - shop here)
- May 10: Mod Pizza (12195 SW Scholls Ferry Rd)
- May 23: Jersey Mike's (10035 SW Nimbus)
So mark your calendars now and keep an eye out for more information to be sent home and posted on Facebook soon!
2023-24 Committee Chairs Needed!
It is time to start looking forward to next year and planning for all the fun events to come.
We are currently in need of people to take on the following roles:
- Art Lit Chair: organize Art Lit projects and manage Art Lit volunteers for the school--project ideas are provided by the district!
- OBOB Chair: manage teams of 3rd-5th graders who participate in a reading-based trivia competition
- Donation Coordinator: solicit and manage donations throughout the year to support various school events
These roles can each be filled by one person or a small team of people, whatever works for you! If you are interested in either position or want to learn more, please contact Stacey Beckman at volunteers@marywoodwardpso.com.
Thank you to Julia Thomas, for taking on both the Room Parent Coordinator and Staff Appreciation roles for the remainder of this year! We are so grateful for your help!
Reimbursement for Class and Committee Expenses
Check requests for other committees or events should be sent to the appropriate Committee Chair for approval.
The sooner you turn in your receipts the better! But all receipts must be in by June 16 to ensure they are processed in the correct tax year.
April PSO Event Recap
April was a busy month full of fun PSO activities.
The Spring Book Fair was a great success! Hopefully you were all able to check it out. With the library back to normal, we can reflect on how the Book Fair went.
- We were able to run 5 days during recess and after school thanks to generous volunteers.
- We got so many donations via the lollipop pull and shoppers who rounded up at check out, that we were able to buy at least 1 book per classroom and books for several students.
- We blew past our goal of selling 1000 books and sold 1840 books!
- We raised nearly $9000 for the library to spend on new books!
Thank you to everyone who donated time or money and who shopped at the Book Fair.
The Auction was simply incredible. Thank you Kelsey Paldino, Katie Hughes, Morgan Fricke and Kristin Romelhardt for creating such a perfect night out! There was no detail missed in the décor or the fun. Thank you, too, for all the volunteers who worked behind the scenes leading up to the night and during the event. It ran flawlessly. Mary Woodward families really embraced the rodeo theme, showing up in rhinestone belts, cowboy hats, boots with spurs and even a lasso was spotted. Guests were just as enthusiastic when it came to the bidding! While we won't know the total profit until all expenses have been paid, the numbers look great so far.
- An amazing $41,300 was raised during the silent and live auctions!
- The paddle raise was also a huge success, raising all the money needed to purchase 10 new two-way radios for school staff.
The art projects donated by each class were not included in the auction. To ensure that everyone had a chance to see and bid on them, these items will be up for auction at the school carnival on June 2. More info on this will be coming in the next few weeks.
The Spring Garden Clean Up was well attended even though it was the day after the Auction. Families showed up to prep the garden for spring planting and were rewarded with a BBQ lunch and dry weather! We were honored to also get volunteers from Tigard High's Service Club and a group of volunteers from Kohl's. Stop by and check out the refreshed garden!
Finally, the SOUPer Hero lunch was the perfect way to honor our school's super heros for National Super Hero Day. Staff were sure in for a treat with all the yummy soups, salads and other goodies that Mary Woodward families brought in. The smells had mouths watering just waiting for lunch break!
If you took pictures at any of these event, don't forget to upload them to TreeRing and maybe they'll be included in the Yearbook. Details on how to upload photos can be found in the Yearbook section below.

Soaring Eagle Volunteer Parking Space
The next drawing will take place on April 29. To get your name in the parking space raffle you can do any of the following:
- volunteer 1 hour in the month -- as recorded in HelpCounter
- attend a PSO meeting
- chair a committee
Completing any of these multiple times means more tickets in the raffle. So if you volunteer 5 hours in the month, come to the PSO meeting and chair a committee, you will get 7 tickets in the raffle. If you're unsure how to update your hours in HelpCounter, please refer to Recording Volunteer Hours here.
Simple Ways to Give Back
We just wanted to remind you about two of the easiest ways Mary Woodward PSO collects donations.
Bottle Drop: To make a donation via the Bottle Drop, all you have to do is pick up a blue bag or two from the office, fill it with redeemable cans and bottles and return it to the Bottle Drop station at 14411 SW Pacific Hwy, Tigard. Every 10 cents counts!
Box Tops: Box Tops have gone completely digital. Instead of collecting those little rectangles, now you can submit copies of your receipt and any earnings are awarded to the PSO automatically. The easiest way to do this is to download the Box Top app and use your phone to photograph your receipts.
