Michigan Schools Vocal Music Association State Honors Choir
Two Wayland Middle School students have made it into the Michigan Schools Vocal Music Association State Honors Choir. These students memorized an audition piece and were selected for this honor. They are Ariel White, 8th Grade (L) and Elaina Thomas, 6th Grade (R). On Saturday, November 4th, these two students along with Mrs. Oostdyk, WMS Choir Director, went to Birch Run High School to begin rehearsals. Rehearsals are held around the State of Michigan on Saturdays. They will perform at DeVos Hall in Grand Rapids on January 25th at 2:00 p.m.
Wayland Middle School Robotics
On Saturday, November 4th, both Wayland Middle School Robotics teams competed in a competition.
Team 22154 competed well and improved with every match, even to the point of being 7th at one point. The team finished in 3rd place for the Motivate Award.
Team 11846 struggled through the first few matches but after working together, the team was able to replace some critical parts to hopefully fix the issues. Team 11846 finished in 2nd place for the Design Award, 2nd place for the Inspire Award, and received a ticket to the State Championships.
Congratulations to both teams!
Dental Visits at Dorr
Kendall Moore, a former Dorr student who is now in dental school, brought her classmate Mandy Compagner to Mrs. Hielkema's class to discuss how to brush and floss teeth through a slideshow! At the very end, students even got to participate in a game. We love the opportunity for these educational moments with our Alumni!

Learning from a Veteran
On Thursday, November 9th, 5th Grade students at Pine Street Elementary had the opportunity to listen to a local veteran's story. Nate Moran was in the Navy from 2002-2007, and then joined the Army from 2008-2014. He is a member of VFW Post 7581 and its Auxiliary in Wayland. Mr. Moran took the time to share pictures, memories, and his secret to success, reading! He emphasized that he wouldn't have appreciated all the places he was able to visit in the military had he not been an avid reader in his youth. Mr. Moran, we thank you for taking the time to talk to our students but we thank you even more for serving our country!
