Cannon Connection
A newsletter for Cannon Elementary families - 2017-2018
Week of April 23, 2018
Hi Cannon Parents!
Last week was a busy week with LOTS of fun events at school - be sure to check out the photos in this newsletter! This week will be another busy week, even though it is only a 4-day week for students & staff- don't forget that there is NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY, APRIL 27th, as this is an inclement weather day on the GCISD Instructional Calendar. Since we did not use any bad weather days, Friday will be a school holiday.
Be sure to check out all of the information in the weekly NEWS FROM PTA section of this newsletter. This week, our PTA has shared information about Cub's Night Out @ SPRING CREEK BBQ on Tuesday, 4/24, opportunities to volunteer for various Moving Days to help Cannon staff prepare for the BIG move to the new school, how to volunteer on Field Day, and ways YOU can help support PTA's efforts to recognize Cannon staff during Staff Appreciation Week during the week of 4/30-5/4. We are so grateful for the MANY ways our wonderful PTA supports our students & school!
Proud to be your principal,
Mrs. Blizzard

EVENTS THIS WEEK
EARTH WEEK @ CANNON!
The theme of Earth Day this year is “End Plastic Pollution” & we will be recognizing the importance of this special day all week long during EARTH WEEK @ CANNON!
We have several fun things planned for this week at Cannon! Our Cannon teachers have designed several activities in their classrooms to help raise awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. Check out the additional ways your child can get involved this week at Cannon!
Monday-wear something green!
All K-5 students will plant seeds in compostable containers that they’ll get to bring home to watch sprout!
Throughout the entire week:
Recycle Plastic- In the library, we will have a BIG collection box for plastic water bottles. If a student brings in a plastic water bottle to recycle, they can bring it to the library, put it in the box, sign their name, and add a decoration to the collection box. Our goal is to fill the box with water bottles by the end of the week. We want to do our part to end plastic pollution!
To Do
Wear green on Monday, April 23
Throughout the week, send in empty, dry plastic water bottles that we can recycle

LIBRARY REMINDERS
GCISD Reading Challenge
The 2017-2018 GCISD Reading Challenge is drawing to a close. We hope all our scholars have been working on the challenge and enjoying fabulous books along the way. Finishers’ names are due to the district no later than May 1st to allow time for certificates to be printed. Please make sure you have given your record sheet to Mrs. Wagner by Friday, April 27th so she can turn your name in.
Library Books Due
All library books need to be turned in by May 1st so Mrs. Wagner can start the BIG task of packing the library for our move to the NEW SCHOOL. Please start looking around your house and in your cars for any Cannon library books. The first class to have all their books turned in will win a prize!
CAREER DAY SPEAKERS NEEDED!
We will have our annual school-wide Career Day for all students K-5 on Wednesday, May 23rd and we need your help! If you are interested in being a presenter or know someone that would be willing to present, please let us know! You can sign up here or you can complete and return this page by Friday, May 4th.
We would like to have individuals come talk to our students about what they do and what they had to achieve to get where they are today. There are so many jobs, careers, and professions available and it would be incredible to expose the students to as many of them as we can. I believe it is important for our students to be educated about future careers and opportunities because it can help motivate them to set goals for their future.
Career Day will be all day on Wednesday, May 23rd, but presenters are not required to be at career day all day. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for presenters by our Cannon PTA. Please let me know the duration of time you are available and I will coordinate your schedule to work around your availability. Presenters will speak to students for no longer than 30 min per group. Some presenters may be in a central location and speak to an entire grade level while others will travel around to different classrooms to present. Presenters will present to their child’s class as well as other classes.
We are looking for presentations to be motivating and exciting for the students so feel free to bring visual aids, computer slide shows, pictures, videos, props or more. Thank you so much for your support. Please feel free to call or email me if
you have any questions. (817) 251-5684 amanda.coburn@gcisd.net.

- receipts from ANY Colleyville business (not just those along 26 corridor) that are dated anytime during the month of April will count
Prizes will be awarded by the City of Colleyville, with the funds to be paid to the winning PTA's. So, let's spread the word and help stimulate some businesses that have been affected by the construction!
