ATTENDANCE MATTERS
Email: mccarthy_attendance@chelmsford.k12.ma.us
Please Send Email: Prior to 9am on the day of the absence (same as current voicemail option) Please Include: Child’s name, Grade, and Reason for absence.
We encourage you to use the email option when reporting an absence, dismissal, etc. Parents are still free to use the phone system to report absences, but you are encouraged to use email for greater office efficiency.
If you prefer, you can certainly call the attendance line prior to 9:00am, at 978-251-5122, please press 1.
We will continue to send automated emails when students are absent. The email serves as notification that your student is not in school and will be marked absent.
In order for an absence to be marked as "Excused", families will need to provide medical documentation.
Thank you for your understanding.
For an absence to be "excused"
Attendance Matters
For an absence to be “excused” families need to provide medical documentation. This includes dismissals from the health office, unless your school nurse is requiring the dismissal based on the “Illness Policy” (ie: temperature over 100, vomiting, etc.) set by the Chelmsford School District or nursing judgment based on concerning symptoms that require further assessment or monitoring. Any absences over 3 days require medical documentation to be considered excused.

Postural Screening for Scoliosis:
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Massachusetts General Law c. 71,s. 57 requires all publicly enrolled students in grades 5 through 9 to receive annual postural screening for scoliosis. Postural screening is essential as our child is going through his/her most rapid rate of growth during 5th-9th grade. During this time, early detection of a spinal curvature can create opportunity for the easiest treatment to correct the growth of the spine. Not recognizing the problem until the child is fully grown can lead to serious complications as an adult, such as pain and even difficulty breathing, which may only be corrected by surgery.
Generally, these screens are part of your child's annual physical examination with the pediatrician. If you would like to opt out of this screening, if your child has had this screening with their healthcare provider, please let us know in writing, no later than April 22nd. OPT OUT HERE
We will conduct our postural screenings on April 29th-May 3rd.
It is important to note that on the day of screening, the screenings will be conducted ensuring the privacy of our students. We ask that female students wear or bring a bathing suit top on the day of the screening; sports bras may cover the scapula and obscure the visualization of the spine and therefore are not optimal. Males will be asked to remove their shirt to ensure appropriate visualization of the bare back to properly see the curves of the spine. If your child is not comfortable participating in this screening during the school day, you may decline the screening by contacting the school nurse. We recommend, in this case, contacting your health care provider to ensure they are screened at their annual physical.
Please call your school nurse with any questions,
Sincerely,
Your McCarthy School Nurses

McCarthy Lunch Menu
Lunch/Cafeteria Reminder:
Lunch/Cafeteria Reminder:
Our school is considered to be "nut aware" and not nut free. Although nuts are allowed, no students are permitted to share food in the building. It is also considered best practice not to have students bring in shelled peanuts for the safety of others. It is important for students to understand that if they are bringing in nut products, they cannot share them regardless of whether the other student is allergic or not. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that no student experiences an anaphylactic response and we can help prevent those events together.
While we have these discussions with students throughout the day, it would be helpful and appreciated if you would address this at home as well.
Medication should be given by the nurse
Good afternoon,
Just a reminder to parents that home medication should not be sent to school with students, the health office is well equipped to medicate, and can call home or work with families for specific needs. Students should not take medication unsupervised at school.
Thank you,
Gina Clancy, LPN
