Mid-Year Reading Assessments Coming!
In January we are required to assess all students on all reading skills. The window for these assessments will run from January 17-February 7. Once reading assessments are completed, I will set up conferences for all children below grade level expectations. If your child is on or above grade level, I always welcome time to talk about their growth and how you can help challenge your child in reading.
Marvelous Math
For the next few months, we will begin to work on adding and subtracting numbers within 1000. This is a HUGE part of 2nd grade curriculum and involves solving various types of problems. We will start out with just the equations, and work on multiple strategies for solving them. Please be aware that in 2nd grade we do not teach the algorithm (which is the way most of us learned in school). Instead, we focus on base ten drawings, number lines, and decomposing numbers and solving addition and subtraction problems for each place value.
Here are several videos which help explain how we teach adding and subtracting numbers within 1000.
