Cornell Newsletter Supporting Your Health & Well-Being
September 8, 2022
Happy September! As we all begin to settle into the start of the semester, try setting up a routine that allows you to build a strong foundation for the semester ahead.
Try asking yourself:
- What can I do most days to help keep my stress in check?
- How do I currently manage my daily to do list and keep my stress in check?
- Are these strategies working for me?
- What else might I try?
There are lots of suggestions in this edition of the newsletter to help you identify self-care strategies and tips for how to build resilience and manage your stress. Read on for tips, resources, and opportunities to set you up for success this semester.

How to Build Your Resilience This Semester
Resilience is your ability to cope with and bounce back from stress and adversity, and hopefully even grow through the experience. It is sometimes referred to as “thriving” … and not just surviving.
People who work to develop their resilience are more likely to:
- Meet the demands of their academic/work and personal lives successfully
- Take action to deal with challenges, problems, and setbacks
- Seek support and assistance when they need it
- Know when to stop, rest, and replenish inner resources
- Have a sense of independence, self-efficacy, and self-worth
- Form and maintain positive, mutually-respectful relationships with others
- Have a sense of purpose and goals for the future
Resilience can be learned, practiced, developed, and strengthened. The habits, practices, and cognitive strategies featured above are key to building resilience.
