Colts Connection - Parents Edition
March
Spring is Here?!
As the weather warms up and snow melts our playgrounds become small lakes and/or giant mud puddles. In order to keep our school clean (and smelling nice), we ask that students wear appropriate foot wear outside for the conditions. It is also important for students to have a pair of clean indoor shoes to wear while inside. This helps reduce any extra work for our custodians who do an amazing job at keeping our school clean. Thank you for your help in this regard.
March Book Madness Winner!
March Book Madness took over the school again this year with one book taking the championship, as voted on by students. Tek the Modern Cave Boy was the champion and ran over the opponent, Sam & Dave Dig a Hole, in the finals. With support and sponsorship from the School Council, this year one class was selected randomly and each student in that class will receive a copy of Tek the Modern Cave Boy... and Mrs. Doucette's class was the big winner! A huge "Thank You!" to Miss Harvey and Mrs. Doucette for organizing this awesome event. Also a huge "Thank You!" to our amazing School Council for purchasing a copy of the winning book for each student in Mrs. Doucette's class.
Eye See Eye Learn (Free Eye Glasses for K Students)
Eye See Eye Learn is a program that provides kindergarten-aged students with a comprehensive eye exam from an optometrist. There is Alberta Health coverage towards your child’s eye exams up to age 19. If required, kindergarten-aged students also receive a free pair of eyeglasses. Click on the attachment below for more information about the Eye See Eye Learn program.
Boys with Braids Presentation
During PALs on February 17th, Mrs. Josephine Small presented to all Grade 1-6 students (except Gr. 4 who were skiing) on Boys with Braids. This is a presentation about the importance and significance of hair and braids in First Nations culture. We have many boys with braids in our school and not all of our students know or understand the significance or why they are important. Our goal is that through educating students on the importance and significance of braids that this will reduce the number of instances, if not completely erase them; of comments being made towards boys with long hair/braids. In our experience the majority of the comments made come from a lack of understanding, which makes this messaging even more important so everyone can feel welcome and safe at PES.
Book Fair
Our Book Fair was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who was able to purchase items and expand their own personal libraries! The total sales for this year's Book Fair was over $10 000 which provides our school with $3 000 in Scholastic money to continue to improve and refresh our library's inventory. Again, thank you to everyone who came and were able to support the Book Fair.
Spring Photos
We will be having Spring Photos again this year. They are scheduled for April 11th and 12th. ALL Grades 1-6 and Tues/Thurs pre-k and Kinder will be taken on the Tuesday. Wednesday will be for anyone who was missed on the Tues and all Mon/Wed pre-k and Kinder. These photos will be done by Lifetouch as we fulfil our contract obligations with them. Next school year we are going to be switching companies to Edge Imaging. We are expecting a considerable improvement in customer services and performance with the new company.
Spring Concert a Success!
It was a packed house for our Spring Concert! We did expect it as it was the first time back in person for concerts of any sorts in 3 years. The concert was a huge success and it was great to see so many people in the gym supporting our students. The students were excited to perform and did an amazing job. A special "Thank You" to Mrs. Sherwin for planning, organizing, and preparing all of the classes for the performance!
Our hope for next year is that the Christmas Concert will be back on, in which case, there will not be a Spring Concert. This year's Spring Concert was due to the Christmas Concert being cancelled.
After School Basketball Wrapped Up
Our Grade 6s hosted a mini tournament to wrap up the basketball season. We had teams from Ponoka Christian School and Iron Ridge Intermediate attend. All the teams played hard and showed great sportsmanship. A special "Thank You" to Mr. Kaegi, Mrs. Skjonsberg, and Mrs. Chapman (from PSC) who volunteered their time to coach all the players!
