SRO program suspended at CPHS
This message is for parents and guardians of students at Champlin Park High School
CPHS administration was informed that the City of Brooklyn Park will be suspending its School Resource Officer (SRO) program at our school effective immediately.
Why is this happening: A new law passed by the 2023 legislature has placed certain restrictions on the safety interventions that school employees and agents can use when intervening with students. Law enforcement agencies consider these new rules a risk to officer safety and a legal liability for their organization which has led to this decision.
School safety remains a priority: The Brooklyn Park Police Department are a partner in maintaining school safety. We have been informed that our current SRO will be reassigned as a patrol officer in the area to ensure a timely response while supporting students and staff throughout the school day. While law enforcement has expressed some significant questions about the recent changes to the statute, they have made clear their commitment to ensuring safety and security in our schools and at school events such as football games.
Anoka-Hennepin Schools values the relationships with law enforcement and is in support of the School Resource Officer program returning as soon as possible. The district remains in close communication with police and we continue to work together to ensure the safest school environments possible.
Thank you for your attention to this message and your support of our school.
Sincerely,
Mike George, principal
