Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
October 2023
Hello 4-H Families
Anne Arundel County Fair
Congratulations to all our 4-Her's on their involvement at the fair! It was so wonderful to see so many more smiling faces in attendance this year! We would like to extend a special THANK YOU to the volunteers who dedicated their time and talents to make this a successful fair. We would like to extend gratitude to these individuals who assisted the 4-H Department specifically:
- For assisting us in judging indoor exhibits on a very hot and steamy day: Mary Thomas, Joseph Degreenia, Danielle House, Hannah Sheldon
- Jessica Snowden and Rav Chatterjee for their assistance with set-up and breakdown.
- Paige Merriam, Amanda Wahle, Heather Knauss for assisting contests.
- To Heather Knauss and Wendy Sites for help grading contest forms.
- To Wendy Sites for overseeing some of the contests and archery.
- Mary Thomas for assisting archery, gardens and numerous other activities.
- To the AAC LAC for hosting the Auction and overseeing all of the work required to put on this event. And to all the livestock club members for their work keeping their animals and environments in order.
We would also like to thank our Anne Arundel County Foundation, including Mary Thomas, Gina Degreenia, Alyssa Degreenia, and MItzi Hardy for conducting our ever-popular Ice Cream Social, ordering free t-shirts for each youth, awarding our youth scholarships, as well as hosting our successful Silent Basket and Cake Auctions! For more information about the AAC Foundation, please check out their page on the AAC 4-H website for more information about how they support our 4-H programming.
Saturday's fair attendance was phenomenal. Your hard work and dedication to making the best better was admired and appreciated by many fairgoers. We look forward to watching our youth develop essential life skills through their project work in 2024. The finished projects are really only the beginning of the journey.
Regards,
Gretchen & Joy

ALL VOLUNTEERS - 3 year background checks are due
The University of Maryland Extension and Maryland 4-H Program thank you for your continued service to positive youth development. Your commitment of time, energy and resources benefits so many youth across the state and is essential to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all youth in Maryland.
In 2021, UME initiated a new volunteer background check policy in order to provide for the safety and well-being of University of Maryland Extension (UME) volunteers and constituents (e.g., staff members, program participants, and the community) as well as to protect UME’s assets and reputation as a service provider. The policy requires that volunteers be background checked every 3 years. Calendar year 2024 would be the first recertification period for individuals who completed their background check in 2021. In order to align the background check process with the annual re-enrollment process through 4-H Online, we will begin the volunteer background check renewal process this fall. This should allow for a smooth re-enrollment process and reduce the chance of gaps in protection or appointments.
As a current volunteer you will need to complete the background check process this fall. We will provide notification of the need for renewal according to the following schedule:
● September - volunteers initially screened in January – April of 2021 (sent out already)
● October – volunteers initially screened in May – August of 2021
● November – volunteers initially screened in September – December of 2021
The notification to renew your background check will come from Sterling Volunteers. Their email address is “theadvocates@sterlingvolunteers.com”. The background check should be completed within 30 days of invitation to avoid separation and dismissal and assure your 2024 enrollment is approved by the March 1 target deadline.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but appreciate your support of this process.
