Muskego Lakes Family Newsletter
March 3rd, 2023
Dear Muskego Lakes Families,
Getting input on our impact is essential. Feedback we receive helps us identify our strengths and opportunities for improvement. Earlier this year, you had the opportunity to take the Parent/Caregiver Experience Survey. Last month, our employees took the Employee Experience Survey. For the next two weeks, our students have a chance to share feedback with us!
We love that our students feel comfortable sharing with our staff their desires to make their experience at Muskego Lakes a success. Students have helped determine what clubs are offered, get voice and choice on what they do to practice skills, and share ideas for different activities or events we have at school. It’s so important that we get their insight and feedback.
Each year, our students have two formal ways to provide us with feedback. First, all our students take a 20 Question Survey about their overall experience at Muskego Lakes. The 20-Question Survey will be given this year on Thursday, March 9th. This survey aims to gauge how we are doing in key areas as a school. Our staff then uses the information to reflect and generate new ideas to strengthen the student experience.
In addition to the 20-question survey, from March 10-17, students also take a 7-question survey in every class on their schedule. The surveys allow students to provide specific feedback for each of their teachers. The 7 questions are:
1. My teacher works with me to make sure that I am learning.
2. My teacher is interested in me as a student and as a person.
3. I think that what I learn in this class will help me be successful in life.
4. The rules and expectations in this classroom are reasonable.
5. I feel safe to share my ideas in this class.
6. I am proud of the work I do in this class.
7. My teacher believes I can be successful.
When teachers receive the results, they will analyze them to identify areas of strength and improvement opportunities within their classroom. Our teachers value student input and will use it to determine the next steps to grow their classroom practice.
In partnership,
Rachel and Nancy

Supporting Student Attendance
Regular and consistent school attendance is imperative to student success. It's important to us that students and families know just how impactful being at school is for them now and in the future.
Do you know how you can make school attendance a priority?
- Talk about the importance of showing up to school every day.
- If you child expresses anxiety about coming to school, express to them that not going wil make it worse, and that school staff are here to help.
- Help your student maintain daily routines, such as finishing homework and getting a good night sleep.
- Try not to schedule dental and doctor appointments during the school day or if you have to, have your student come before or after their appointment.
- If your teens must stay home because they are sick, make sure they have asked teachers for resources and materials to make up for the missed learning time in the classroom.
- Find out if your children feel engaged by their classes, and feel safe at school. Ask them about who they are spending time with, what they are doing in class and more.
- Monitor you student's academic progress and seek help from teachers or tutors when necessary.
- Make sure teachers know how to contact you.
- Stay on top of your child’s social contacts. Peer pressure can lead to skipping school, while students without many friends can feel isolated.
- Encourage your teen to join meaningful after-school activities, including sports and clubs.
- Reach out for support if your student is showing signs of anxiety.
If your child is struggling with attendance please know we are here to support and work with you. Please reach out to Stacy Pawlak (Stacy.pawlak@muskegonorway.org).

Staff Member Spotlight - Mr. Brickweg
We asked Mr. Brickweg, school counselor to share a little about himself and his career, in addition to what what makes him proud to work at Muskego Lakes and he said:
"I am proud to have earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities in Psychology with a minor in Leadership. I had the opportunity to participate as an athlete during my time at Minnesota and love being able to bring those experiences and understanding of the work it takes to be successful as a student athlete. During my time at the University of Minnesota I discovered a passion for working in the school setting as well as my love for psychology. This coupled with moving to Wisconsin to marry my wife Erin led me to pursuing a Master of Science in Education - School Counseling degree from Concordia University Wisconsin.
I spent time while in grad school as a substitute teacher at Franklin High School. This opened my eyes to the realities of working in schools and provided many opportunities to learn new skills. After being a substitute I received an emergency School Counseling License in order to be an additional counselor at Whitman Middle School and Jefferson Elementary School in Wauwatosa. I have also coached high school basketball at Brookfield Central for the past two years where I got to be a part of taking second at state and have posted consecutive winning seasons with the freshman boys teams. I am so excited to get to work at Muskego Lakes and continue to grow and learn with all of my students."
