November 2021
A Note from Dr. Hanson, Superintendent
Thankful, Grateful, & Kindness
Dear Students, Staff, and Parents/Guardians,
During November, the term thankful comes to the forefront of many conversations. I am here to share that we are not only thankful for each of you during November, but we are also grateful for your kindness and support every month of the year.
We realize the past two and half years have been challenging; however, you have made learning possible for the North Platte Public School District with your spirit of unity and kindness. And for you, we remain thankful.
As we look to a season of gratitude and peace, I am sharing a 30-Day Acts of Kindness challenge to continue the spirit sparked by you. Feel free to download this challenge and complete it with your loved ones.
Sincerely,
Ron Hanson, NPPS
Superintendent

Brain food: What foods help with mood? ~ Nebraska Medicine
Published October 18, 2021
When you eat your fill, you're feeding trillions of tiny bacteria, too.
"Nutrients in our diet work together to produce different hormones," says nutrition therapist Jenna Wuebker, MS, RD, LMNT. "The foods you eat can help regulate your mood and emotions."
Nutrients are the building blocks of happy hormones, which are created in your gut.
"For instance, serotonin is one of our happy hormones," explains Wuebker. "The majority of serotonin is produced in our gut, meaning intestines. The healthier you're eating, the more serotonin your body makes, which may improve your mood."

8 signs your teen may be vaping
If you have young children or teens, it's probably crossed your mind. Is my child vaping and how do I know?
You have reason to be concerned. The number of youth engaging in vaping is rising at an alarming rate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2019 annual National Tobacco Survey (CDC) estimates that 27.5% of our youth reported using an e-cigarette within the last 30 days. This was up from 20.8% in 2018.
Additionally, a survey released by the National Institutes for Health (NIH) in early 2019 found that 37% of 12th graders reported vaping in 2018, compared with 28% in 2017.
Unless you catch your child in the act, it can be difficult to determine if they are actually vaping.
The best approach is to have regular conversations with your child about the use of e-cigarettes and tobacco products, and hope you can have a positive impact on their habits. You should also be aware of the friends and company that your child keeps. If they are e-cigarette or tobacco users, there's a good chance your child is using these products as well.
While it is definitely easier for your child to hide a vaping habit than a cigarette smoking habit, with a little bit of detective work and staying in tune to your child's routines, there are a few cues you can watch for that may be an indication your child is vaping. These include:

APP & Tech Tips
What Parents Need to Know About Apple Guided Access
iPhones and iPads don’t offer separate user accounts. So when you hand your Apple device to a child to play a game or watch a video, you’re also handing them access to your email, the web, messaging and other apps through which they could accidentally do something regrettable. Apple Guided Access solves this problem by letting you restrict the iPhone or iPad to one particular app whenever your child uses the device. If they try and leave that app, they will be asked for a password or Face ID, meaning they can’t access anything they shouldn’t. Here, we show you how to find and set up the Guided Access feature, so you can confidently let your child borrow your iPhone or iPad.
In the guide, you'll find step-by-step instructions for parents on how to set it up and how to switch it on.

1:00 pm – Until Food is Gone
This is an OPEN AIR, DRIVE THRU Distribution. Patrons will drive their car through a line, and volunteers will bring the boxed food to the car. Free of charge. 325 Households will be served on a first come first serve basis. The Food Pantry is sponsored by the Food Bank of the Heartland.
Please start the line OUTSIDE of the school parking lot next to the tennis courts. DO NOT COME INTO THE PARKING LOT PRIOR TO THE SEMI UNLOADING THE DISTRIBUTION ITEMS.
If you are in the parking lot prior to the gates opening we will ask you to move your vehicle. When the mobile distribution begins, cars can drive up to the gate by the Northeast corner of the football field. Patrons will drive through the alley between the football field and the high school building, exiting on West A Street. Use only the entrance closest to the tennis courts to avoid congestion as students leave after school. While waiting for the distribution to begin you need to follow all traffic laws. Do not block driveways or streets for any reason. Safety is our number one concern and we do not want anyone to get hurt.
