Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students and Families!
Last week I had the opportunity to host our first ever Student Council forum, where students from over 35 of our clubs, athletics, and activities were able to come together to celebrate the successes at CHS and outline the hurdles that we face. Partnering with leadership, we will make plans to address students’ thoughts and concerns. It was wonderful to have student representatives from all groups there and to work together to make CHS better.
Tonight, we have two opportunities for parents/families to engage with us. At 5:00 PM, I will be hosting Coffee with Cari, a time to chat informally with me. I look forward to connecting and to sharing what is happening at CHS. After that, Family Forecasting Night is from 6:00-8:00. Students received forecasting materials today in their Advisory classes. This is an opportunity to ask questions and speak with counselors about this important process. Both events are in the CHS library.
CHS students continue to showcase their talents in so many ways. Our thespians are gearing up for their spring show, “The Little Mermaid” which debuts in less than a month. Speaking of debuts, our award winning dance team gave a preview of their state routine “Madness” at our annual Festival of Dance.
Finally, this week is School Counselor’s Week. I would like to take a minute to thank Ms. Michelle Olson, Ms. Carly Halverson, Ms. Brittney Harmon, Ms. Dezi Johnson, and Mr. Trevor Lockwood for all that they do to support our students. CHS school counselors have many hats and make CHS rock!
Have a wonderful week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science. Assessment tasks are tied to grade-level standards and units of study. Each assessment is an opportunity for students to demonstrate cumulative growth and learning over the course of their school experience.
Canby schools begin Oregon Statewide Assessments in March; and Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
Your principal and teachers will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates and ways to support your student’s success. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.
State Testing Dates for 11th graders:
Math=Feb 13-14
Science=Feb 21-24
Forecasting Information: Forecasting for students is the second week of February in Advisory. It is very important that students attend their advisory. Forecasting is the process where we build next year’s schedule based on student needs and requests. It is important for families to work with their students on their course choices. The more accurate the information, the more likely students will get the class choices they request. The schedule will also be more balanced and serve our students’ needs more fully. This process is essential, and we look forward to partnering with students, staff, and families in order to build the best schedule for next year.
Important Forecasting Dates:
Forecasting materials distributed in Advisory, Thursday, February 9
Family Forecasting Night, Thursday, February 9 @ 6:00 PM
Student Forecasting Fair, Friday, February 10@ lunch
Forecasting materials collected in Advisory, Thursday, February 16
Please note: This is for current 9-11 graders. We will go through a similar process with 8th graders in March.

We are excited to once again host our annual Prom Dress Giveaway event on March 18-19 at the Oregon Convention Center. Attendance at CHS
To ensure the accuracy and efficiency of our attendance process, please remember the following guidelines:
If your student needs to leave class for an appointment or because they are sick, inform the attendance office 30 MINUTES PRIOR to leave time. This will help us ensure that your student receives a note to leave class in a timely manner. Students will not be excused without a note.
Pre-Excused Absence: For any anticipated absence that will be more than three days, students are expected to pick up a Pre-Excused Absence Form from Jessie Munoz at the Attendance Office.
To report an absence, call Jessie Munoz at our attendance line at 503-263-7210 or email chs-attendance@canby.k12.or.us.
Students have 48 hours to have unexcused absences excused. Students may lose the opportunity to make up work for credit due to unexcused absences. Please report an absence as soon as possible.
Remember that attendance matters and students who attend class regularly are more likely to stay on track, graduate on time, learn deeply, and get the most from their high school experience.
