Reading Buddies
I walk into the 1st grade and see small groups sitting around the room, and all I hear is the low hum of reading. Every Tuesday, since beginning on February 21st, Mrs. Steinmetz's 3rd grade class gets to read to Miss Weismiller’s 1st grade students. This program is called “Reading Buddies,” because an older student is paired up with a younger student. This shows the importance of reading and encourages younger students to read. They plan to do it for the rest of the year. They also plan to do it next year. So if you see someone struggling to read or they need other help, stop and give them a hand. A.R. Rocks Student Reading
Accelerated Reader (AR) is like a spring board that extends students’ vocabulary and exercises students’ minds to be better readers. The AR computer program actually counts how many words a student reads beginning in Kindergarten. This month we are highlighting students who have made the Mini Millionaires Club of Kindergarten through 4th graders, or the Millionaires Club of 5th and 6th graders. Pictured here are 1st graders Andrew Richardson, Jacob Sanchez, and Deegan Cole reading 100,000 words; 2nd grader Brady Buckhave & 3rd grader Isla Kelly reading 500,000 words; and 4th grader Alliyah Burger has already read over 1,000,000 words! Anyone can meet their AR goal; it just takes reading one word at a time everyday!
Reading 5,000 Words
Reading 750,000 Words
Reading 1,000,000 Words
AM Sends Students Soaring!
Can you add, subtract, multiply, and divide? Well, if you can't, just do Accelerated Math (AM). Accelerated Math is a program that helps kids learn every aspect of 1st-4th grade math. It is a fun program that challenges students to master higher and higher goals. Pictured here is Mrs. Hopper's 3rd grade AM Superstar Tyson Miller. Pictured below are Mrs. Steinmetz's 3rd grade AM Superstars: Serissa Beach, Kelsie McKinley, Mason Hamlett, Jacee Cole, Tyeler Gulden, Kaeli Slone, and Trey Rompies.

A Duck In The Hand....
Quack! Quack! Mrs. Bosch’s first grade class was able to see and hold some furry friends on Monday, March 6th. According to some of the students, the warm fuzzy ducklings were soft and pretty. Baylee Buckhave and her parents, Alyssa and Brandon Buckhave, brought in their ducks, Felicia and Squeakers. Baylee and her family have owned the ducks for about two weeks and Baylee says, “I love my ducks.” Baylee's class now loves her ducks too!

Garden Club Challenge
On Wednesday, March 8th, Miss Warren started a "Garden Club Silver Challenge" to raise money for seeds and other items for the salsa garden here at MES. The classes that fill up their classroom's jar will get a nacho cheese/chip party. The challenge ended today, Friday, March 17. The results are in and EVERY CLASS won a nacho party after Spring Break! Altogether MES raised $750! A special shout goes out to Ms. Chalk's 4th grade class who brought in the most at $89.13. Mrs. Steinmetz's 3rd grade came in second with $81.92. Mrs. Dole's 6th grade class filled their jar in the first three days and raised $66.97, and Mrs. Beam's 4th grade class turned in $62.50 in all silver coins, not one copper colored penny! Miss Warren was totally overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and says, "Thanks to all who helped support the Garden Club. We are so excited to get digging in the dirt and brightening up the place with some flowers. We are also going to start our seedlings soon after break so we can begin on the salsa garden out back."
Why Pinch on St. Patrick's Day?
When someone says St. Patrick's Day, you usually think of leprechauns or green clovers. The meaning of St. Patrick’s Day isn’t just about wearing green and partying. The meaning of St. Patrick’s Day is a celebration for the remembrance of an Ireland patron saint, who brought Christianity to Ireland during the fifth century. The death of the patron saint was on March 17th, which is St. Patrick’s Day.
There was almost no one to pinch at MES as you can see in this picture by all the green worn in K-2nd grades on Friday, March 17th. Ever wonder why we pinch people who don’t wear green? According to the CS Monitor, “St. Patrick's revelers thought wearing green made one invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). People began pinching those who didn't wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers.” So beware! If you’re not wearing green, you might just get pinched by a leprechaun friend!

Team Sports Is A Must!
Baseball, soccer, or swimming? Are you thinking about signing up for a team sport this spring? Think no further! Here are four good reasons why you should! I think that it is important for people to play team sports because kids need to get plenty of exercise, build confidence, learn discipline, and learn how to trust others.
Exercise when you are younger helps build bone strength. Team sports also exercise the brain because you have to memorize objectives, strategies, plays and more. Children now spend an average of more than seven and a half hours a day in front of a screen according to the President's Council on Fitness. Teams sports are an easy fix!
Team sports build confidence by teaching you to have a winning attitude. If you are confident that you can win a game, you play better. This confidence goes for school work, sports, conquering a task, or even getting a girlfriend. It all starts with team sports!
Team sports also include discipline. Coaches teach players to respect the team. ‘’By the time they reached the fourth grade, kids who played structured sports were better at following instructions and remaining focused in the classroom,’’ according to The Medical Daily. This discipline helps later on in life by being able to take orders from a boss. You're also disciplined enough to obey laws and work with excellence.
Playing on a team and having to support your teammates builds trust. A trusted teammate says, “If you mess up, you have teammates to back you up.” Trusting teamwork is important in some sports because achieving a victory almost always requires the effort of every team member. According to IAC Publishing, “Even sports, like swimming, that are considered individual sports, often form teams to benefit from a support system for the individual athletes.”
Now you can see that team sports will benefit you in at least four ways. So I hope I have convinced you to join a team this spring!
