Financial Aid
2024-2025 FAFSA/ TASFA now OPEN!
FAFSA Update 1/31/2024
On January 30, 2024, the Department of Education/ Federal Student Aid (FSA) announced that colleges will NOT receive student’s FAFSA application information until the first part of March 2024.
Read the full article here: https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-announces-more-31-million-fafsa-forms-successfully-submitted-and-update-student-aid-index-calculation
I know that many students are waiting for their Student Aid Index (SAI) report for scholarship applications. For now, use the Federal Student Aid Estimator for scholarship applications that are asking for your SAI.
Federal Student Aid Estimator website: https://studentaid.gov/aid-estimator/
What does the delay mean for your financial aid status at your college/university? Students will receive their financial aid package from the colleges they have been accepted to in mid-March, depending on how quickly the college is able to process the application information and if there are no errors on your application. Unfortunately, if there is an error on your application, you will not be able to correct the error until the application is fully processed and sent to the college. Once the application is processed, you will receive an email from the Department of Education/ Federal Student Aid that you need to log in to your FSA account to correct your FAFSA application. Then, the Department of Education will re-send your FAFSA application information to the colleges and you will be able to receive your financial aid package.
The Texas priority deadline for FAFSA is still March 15th. The Terry HS deadline for FAFSA is still March 15th. Even though there are delays in the system, please do not wait to submit your FAFSA, let’s still try to get everything taken care of now, that way when the first part of March gets here, your information can be sent to your colleges.
Students, if you have the social security number (SSN) but your parents do not, please have them wait to try to create their FSA ID. There is an automated message when you call the Federal Student Aid helpline that says parents without an SSN cannot create their account at this time and to please try again in a few days. I will keep an eye on this issue and send an announcement that it is working again.
Students and parents, we are in this together! I am here to help as much as I can. Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have questions or need assistance. The changes/updates made to the 2024-2025 FAFSA application are new to all of us. Please let me know if I can help in any way.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nilsen
