Disability Services Newsletter
Back to School Edition August 2021
Welcome Message:
Special educators, we are so happy to have you back! The past year and a half has been crazy, but you made it through and continue to dedicate your career to students with disabilities. We know that education is more than reading, writing, and math. Of course, those are important, but so is communication, prosocial behavior, self-regulation, and soft skills that allow kids to be happy and successful. Every day, you build and strengthen relationships with students and it makes all the difference in their lives. There’s an old saying that “Kids don’t care what you know until they know that you care.” This is always true, but especially now, when students are returning to in-person instruction. Some of them may need to re-learn how to be students. That’s ok. I know that they are in the best hands with you. I have no doubt that each of you will encourage, support, and love our students this year. Thank you for everything you do for the students of SAISD.
Respectfully,
Kristen Williams, Ph.D.

eSped Training Opportunities
Accessing eSped - eSPED/Frontline Special Education and Interventions, v3
Frontline (eSPED and other applications) are continuing to experience problems, particularly with adding new users and changing access for existing users. Please know that we have turned these issues over to Frontline for resolution. We have asked to elevate the urgency of addressing these problems since our school year has officially started. Unfortunately, we are unable to resolve these issues internally. We understand the extreme difficulty and inconvenience this causes our users. We have a high volume of requests, problems, questions, etc. that we are diligently working through. Please understand the response time is slower than usual due to the complications with Frontline and the time of year. If you have submitted a Request for Access or for student records, please do not re-submit. You will hear from Jennifer Nuckles or a member of the Compliance Team on the status of your request as soon as they get to it. Your grace and patience is greatly appreciated.
For Texas records requests via eSPED, please complete the form at this link: Texas Out-of-District eSPED Records Request.
To request access to eSPED, please complete the form at this link: eSPED Access Request (users must have a district email account prior to requesting access).
Having trouble logging in to eSPED?
First, if you have not been set up with a user account, YOU MUST REQUEST ACCESS to eSPED by submitting the link above! Once your user account is established, Jennifer Nuckles will email you with next steps. If she has not yet emailed you and you HAVE submitted the request for access, please DO NOT resubmit another request.
Existing users having trouble accessing eSPED? Follow the step-by-step instructions found in this help document. If your district email password has changed or expired you will have to contact the Help Desk. (I am unable to assist with resetting a password.) If you continue to experience problems, then email Jennifer Nuckles, jnuckles1@saisd.net, with a screenshot of the problem.
For other helpful links and resources related not just to eSPED, but to the Compliance Team, please visit the "eSPED + Compliance Team" Sharepoint.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding!
Update: Accommodations List
The old Accommodations screens have been officially retired and are no longer available. Everyone is to use the new Accommodations List screen that was provided to you last year. The SA Accommodations Data Collection Form can still be run and will still pull the information that was entered on the old accommodations screens. The Accommodations Data Collection Form is the name of the ‘report’ to run for accommodations entered on the “Accommodations List” screen. (This new form currently only provides 7 columns or 7-weeks. We have put in many requests to Frontline to update this form to 9 columns for 9-weeks. There is no word from Frontline whether this update will be made or when it will be available.)
Contingency Plan
At this time, SAISD continues to require all Annual ARDs to have an updated Contingency Plan. *NEW* for the 2021-22 school year, we will be using the eSPED screen created by Frontline for all Contingency Plans. This screen is called, “Special Education Emergency Contingency Plan”. Look for specific guidance to be posted soon!

New Guidance: Homebound Information
Homebound/Hospital Instruction is designed to provide continuity of educational services between the classroom and the home/hospital setting for students whose medical needs prevent school attendance on a campus. Students who are served through the Homebound/Hospital Program must meet all of the following four criteria consistent with state rule and the Texas Student Attendance Accounting Handbook,:
The student’s eligibility for services as determined by the ARD or §504 Committee.
The student’s condition must be medical only.
The student’s medical condition must be documented by a physician licensed to practice in the United States.
The student must be confined either at home or in a hospital for a minimum of four weeks. The weeks may or may not be consecutive. Hospital must be located within SAISD boundaries.
If a student is chronically ill, the student’s admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) or §504 committee shall determine whether the weeks of confinement need to be consecutive.
The committee shall determine the type and amount of instruction to be provided in accordance with law, and, if applicable, the length of the transition period to the school-based setting based on current medical information.
